Typically the grade under the deck/porch (inside skirt) can be graded out some to allow for more funtionality/storage space. Typically the grade remains dirt or gravel is put down. In some cases concrete can be poured. The skirted area below the deck/porch is not built to be water tight though. The composite floor boards on the deck do have gaps between them so some water will still come down in the skirted underside. The floor boards under the porch have gaps (matches deck floor) as well but will allow much less water to enter the underside (skirted area) due to a porch roof being overhead. The picture you commented on shows a horizontal slat skirt, but you can also do solid Hardie Panel skirt or lattice skirt.

I love the look of the skirting on this home! Can you tell me if the slat skirting horizontal boards are the same width as the home siding or larger? Also what material did you use on the horizontal boards? Thank you!

Thank you for your inquiry.

The horizontal boards are made of PVC. Since they are cut from a standard sheet good size, the slats typically max out in 8' or 10' widths. We just butt them together on vertical supports which are not visible because we paint them black. This gives the appearance that the slats keep going.

We typically use Palight PVC. I am not aware of the specific fasteners used. It likely varies from project to project. The separation of the boards vary as well, but typically would be around 1".
