Counter Top Advice

We are getting to the final stages of our full kitchen remodel. I cannot seem to decide on a counter top.

I would like to do a butcher block on the island but don't know if I should match my flooring or what to do with that...

Any ideas/words of wisdom for my counter tops? We are looking at both granite and quartz. At first I was thinking a sparkly black but now that I have my Black Stainless appliances I am worried they will be too dark?

Currently I think I am leaning towards matching the flooring with a butcher block on the island and then a white with maybe some grey in the perimeter counter tops?!

I would love feedback.

Your choices are interesting. The black appliances have a modern look and the light fixture is an opposite: vintage farmhouse. I am a person who LOVES balancing styles for an eclectic style. I also love butcher block countertops. Are you going to be using the countertop as a real cutting surface? If the answer is yes I would go with the natural light wood tone. It would look fabulous. Or you could go with a beautiful slab of wood with an amazing grain pattern. What comes to mind is on Frankie and Grace on Netflix. The two gay ex husbands have an amazing kitchen island with a gorgeous wood countertop. Check it out. I really think your kitchen with be a great place!

I like butcherblock on the island. The common butcher block is maple, which can look a bit too yellow with the application of food-grade mineral oil. My current butcherblock is oak and looks more brown than the maple. That may work for you unless your butcherblock supplier has a wood which will be more similar to your floor. I lightly oil (and wipe off any excess) butcherblock every couple of weeks. I don’t actually cut anything directly on the butcherblock. I use washable plastic cutting sheets or Corian cutting boards.

I like Momofthree's suggestion. A (matte) black countertop will provide some balance with dark appliances.

What floors did you use. They're really nice!

Watch Tower by Nucore. 100% waterproof!

I think dark countertops would be great for "grounding" the white cabinets and coordinating with the black stainless appliances (if you had regular stainless I would still vote for dark countertops).

I absolutely love Steel Grey granite and Blue Pearl granite. I think either would be great with a butcher block island top. You can get away with the different countertops because your cabinets are the same on the perimeter and island.

My cabinets are dark so I don't know of too many dark quartz patterns. Silestone Stellar Night is pretty. Hanstone has a similar color called Black Coral.

You can also go with soapstone for a more rustic vibe.

The floor is beautiful! You will have to have a care to be complimentary to the grayish tone to them, though, when picking your butcher block wood, and the rest of the counters

I agree that a medium dark stone would strike a nice balance - maybe steel gray, or virginia mist (both honed, not shiny) granite, or soapstone, or a soapstone-look quartz.

A good light granite or quartz, maybe marble look, of course would be nice, and allow you a little more leeway to play with color on the walls/backsplash. .

The darker flooring with the white cabinetry is a a very interesting combo. I think a medium colored stone would go great as your counter top. I think granite would look great!

Boy that is a dark kitchen. Can't really perform tasks with nightclub lighting. Now the forum is recommending dark counters to the mix? Yikes!!!!!!~!

This kitchen has to have some additional overhead lighting.

    • White cabinets,
    • white counters
    • black for the hardware
    • black for the island light fixture
    • Maybe black for the sink
    • and black accents in the tile backsplash.

    The black appliances dominate everything.

I think it would look great with a darker top with the lighter floor works with the correct lighting it will give a good look and would be different.

There is a window on the right side of the photo with the blinds shut, right. Looks to me like they will have nice natural light. Other commentators are right about the beautiful dark granites for the perimeter tops. And at least in my area the dark granite are priced reasonable! I think light wood would look amazing but will be tricky so it not too yellow. But then again black, white and yellow is a great color combination

Natural light doesn't happen at night, or much in the daytime if it is northern exposure. So Beverly is correct about that, they need either perimeter ceiling fixtures (cans or shallow box LED inserts) or undercabinet lights -- preferably both.

Agreed that more overhead light would help - but I disagree about needing white everything. I have black countertops, and with my 3 layers of dimmable lighting (pendants, cans, and undercabinet lights), they are plenty bright.

I like your choices and think you'll have a beautiful and functional kitchen if you can add more lighting. I also appreciate the challenge of dealing with infrastructure in the ceiling and your layout deals with that well (i.e., the soffit on the left).
