That’s good news, Linda!

I have a crazy quilt top that my mom made. I’m planning to add some machine embroidery then use decorative stitches for the quilting. Starting that is going to be my project this weekend.

Tonight I added some more rows to the coin quilt. I'm hoping to have the top pieced this weekend. I'm trying to decide if I should just back it with a sheet my SIL gave me and not use any batting. It would be a light weight quilt, which I think would be fine for Africa. I know we've discussed light weight quilts for the South before.

She gave me a couple of boxes of old sheets and I love the quilts I've seen made from them. I hope to use the pretty floral ones for a quilt top.

I have one more row (made it at retreat) to sew onto a quilt top....scrappy greens/scrappy neutrals/white with consistent gold center......I called it split 9-patch but recently saw it called paradigm relief...whatever that means. :-)

Bev2009, I don't know if it gets cold in any part of Africa, but I didn't use batting when I sent quilts to Haiti.

I am going to my mom's to do a good cleaning today. Since I am having surgery Tuesday, it will be a while before I can get back up there. After I get home later tonight, I am going to surgery proof my house. I will put everything I think I might need at waist height or above since I will not be able to bend over to get things. LOL It is sort of like toddler proofing a house. I also have a toilet seat riser to install, laundry to do and roll up the rugs so that I do not trip over them with crutches. I bought one of those grabber things to have in case I drop something onto the floor. I have also been cutting up scraps into 2 and 2.5 inch squares. Those are to keep me busy once I can sit for any amount of time. I think the worst part of this will be being cooped up in the house for a while. I am not used to that.

Jackie, I hope your surgery goes well. Is it out-patient? I had my rotator cuff surgery at a surgical clinic and went home soon after I woke up. DH helped me park on the sofa and I went right back to sleep! :)

Larri, those are some classic movies your DD has picked out! Enjoy!

So far I haven’t started sewing yet. I’ve knitted a dozen or so rows on a baby blanket. Laundry is done now so I think I’ll have lunch then go sew.

Linda - glad the eye is healing - you're on the way. I had both eyes fixed, not fun but not the worse thing I ever went through, either.

Jackie, best thoughts for success and quick recovery for you. My sister had it done and unfortunately wasn't prepared for needed recovery time, I think she got bad information from the Dr. She was under the impression that she would be going back to work the next week with no problems - unbelievable. You do have to be prepared for it. But in time it will heal fine if you take care of yourself.

I'm trying to decide on a pieced backing for this top that I completed this week. It's a square quilt with a lot of black in it. I was thinking maybe a large simple quilt block such as a log cabin or a star block. Bev, I've been thinking about doing the same thing, a quilt without any batting, a light-weight quilt for the Florida Summer, just enough cover to keep the fan breeze off but not too much to cause me to sweat, either. I'm just wondering if it would be too flimsy to look and feel like a quilt, though. I wonder if a middle layer of just cotton fabric would suffice? Just to give it a little body?? I tried just putting a flannel layer in the middle once because I thought it would be lighter and I was wrong!! But I really liked how it quilted, I've done a couple that way now. And I've also just used flannel on the back with no batting. It's lighter but still pretty warm and I can't use anything flannel for a couch quilt because the dog sheds hair and it really catches in a flannel quilt terribly.

Bev - depends on where in Africa you are sending the quilts. We were in southern Africa in June (years back!) and it was cold. Their winter. Closer to the equator, warmer, for sure.

Larri, I love your Sloth Saturday! I want to do that!!!

I am not quilting, but I finally finished a dress I started for my GD. It is knit and I broke the needle on my Serger. It is so old (about 30 years!) and none of the stores in town carry the correct needles. I had to order them online and wait for them to arrive. I hope she hasn't outgrown it before she gets to wear it! :) Nana is making a matching fabric dress, so I hope to sew that tonight since DH has a terrible cold and isn't up to doing anything. I really need to spend time in the yard, but the weeds will wait!

I just soaked three pieces of fabric in Bubble Jet Set 2000 so I can make labels out of them. One of the expected babies in our family, my newest great-nephew, was born yesterday. Now I can finish labeling his quilt and send it on its way. I'm also chain piecing like crazy on Jared Takes a Wife. I did take a few hours off today to go college shopping with my granddaughter. She moves into her dorm next Tuesday. How fun to begin a new chapter in her life. She actually starts college as a sophomore, because she earned so many college credits in high school. That saved some time and money.

Linda, I'm glad your eye is recovering. Jackie, I hope all goes well with your surgery. It sounds like you are well-prepared.

Glad to hear you are on the mend, Linda. Sending well wishes to you too, Jackie. I haven't sewn in a couple weeks, but I did drop off some entries to the state fair. I will find out the week after next how they rank. Have a great weekend all!

I ended up knitting and reading most of the weekend. I finished the book and the baby blanket! Maybe I'll work on the crazy quilt next weekend.
