What a lovely space! As the daughter of a professional pianist who has a dedicated music room, I know what an important and cherished place this is in a home. I love everything you've done thus far and think your plans to add bookcases will finish things off beautifully. I would go with white for those, and I think your current wall color is very nice. Do the chairs and bench provide comfortable enough seating? I like the looks of them, but can also envision a cushy loveseat in here, where one could sink right in and soak up the music.

Sorry I have no idea why you need built ins for what? Some shet music /Maybe be a bit more forthcoming with info. IMO those built ins will be home to abunch of stuff in no way related to music so correct me if I am wrong.

You might focus on a pair of corner cabinets painted the same color as your walls -- the current color of which is fine. You could have drawers or solid doors covering shelves holding removable file boxes of music below and add glass doors above.

You could connect your corner cabinets at the top with a box shelf (or a pair of box shelves), to w which you could add a light that would highlight any art you hang above your piano. You could leave room between the corner cabinet and the piano for a modern LED floor lamps to light the music you're using.

If you're connecting the two cabinets above the piano, that will decrease the space for any art so you might search for something more horizontal than vertical.

Really like the look of the two cabinets you currently have -- hope you can use them elsewhere.

If the seating is comfortable, keep it.

Consider adding small end tables -- perhaps with tall then lamps with white shades -- a place to set a favorite beverage while you're guests are listening to music. In lieu of a coffee table, consider a pair of small storage ottoman for more music storage and with flip lids that could double as extra seating and/or as a coffee table as needed.

The drapes you have are really nice but your room lacks color so you might consider new drapes if you want to add your favorite color to the room especially if you paint your built ins your wall color.

Patricia The lower portion of the built-ins would be drawers and would hold my sheet music, the upper portions would be some books, some small sculptures or other three dimensional piece that I have collected from travels, all Highlighted with lighting…No way would it be a collection of “stuff”. I can’t live like that.

I think that will be lovely, Laura Jazz, as well as practical. Will you add bookcase lights? I think they would add some decorative value, give you another option for lighting the room softly, and serve to highlight all that “stuff unrelated to music”...

For colors, a popular idea is to use colors from your lovely rug. The rug artist has already done the work of coordinating all the colors with each other.

My DH was a professional musician for 20 some years. I found file cabinets with suspended files to be the best storage for his gazillions of sheets of music.

I’m thinking about building in ikea havsta cabinets on either side with my carpenter building in a top lighted display cabinet that would go all the way across the top with maybe integrated down lighting on the piano. Havsta comes in gray like my walls. See picture.

Based on your inspiration, I'm not sure this room will be successful. White built-ins seem all wrong for this space. I don't fully understand if these types of cabinets are the best to store sheet music. I would consider black cabinets.

If you keep the current wall color, I'm not sure dark built-ins will work, particularly with the white chairs and bench. The room currently has dark cabinets, and while they're not black, they're really not working with the space. I think white built-ins could really liven up the space.

Beverly and FB interesting idea to go dark. I’m not afraid of it. That rug (yes it’s awesome, bought at an auction in Connecticut for $225 !!!) previously was in my dining room that had one black wall - BM iron mountain as did the back wall of the living room (where the chairs used to live). . See pic. :).
I thought about iron mountain for the shelves or for the wall and backs of open bookcases with lighter gray (like walls) on bookcases. Also wondering about the dark blue - same as rug color.
Most people seem to like the chairs but I fear they are to stark. I like the low profile of them, however.
