I don't think there is much difference except for the control panel. On a free-standing range, the sides are finished, and the controls are on the backsplash. The free-standing rande that we got last year when we remodeled has controls on the front, and the backsplash tiles go all the way down. Point of preference, we chose a model (GE Profile) with the controls on the vertical. Because we are messy. Many ranges have the controls on the horizontal surface.

thank you-- I always thought the slide in looked better but I guess it's really more practical to have the controls at the back. good to know that either would work. I just got the same answer pretty much from contractor.

I like slide in because I don't like reaching across the hot surface to change things. We have a GE cafe and the controls are on the front vertical with knobs.

We had a free standing (in our temporary house ) with the controls on the back. I can’t recall the brand but the rear control/knob area interfered with large pots fitting well on the rear burner. the pan couldn’t push back far enough to center over the burner. Make sure you take a large pan and try to fit it on the back burner of whatever freestanding range you are considering if you decide to go that direction.

I really prefer having the controls on the front with a slide in. Ours ( perhaps all?) gives you the ability to lock or turn off the commands on the touch screen so you don't inadvertantly apply a touch screen setting by leaning on it while cooking.

I much prefer the slide in look and, being short, having the knobs and touch screen at the front.

After much deliberation, I recently purchased a free-standing range -- and it wasn't about control location. It was about *where the oven heat is vented.* That location is different on various slide-in brands/models:

Some slide-ins vent at the top of the oven door (at risk of making door handle & front knobs too hot, read complaint reviews), others vent out the back panel (making a non-combustible wall behind it all the way to the floor an absolute must), others vent through a back burner (at risk of scorching a pot on your stovetop), and others vent along the back top edge of the stovetop (with vent holes large enough for food to drop down, and heat enough to damage a backsplash, which people have done and lamented about on houzz).

I decided that I preferred the oven venting location of free-standing models, which vents from beneath the oven control panel sticking up in the back. This elevated vent location can't get anything dropped down into it, is protected from heat-damaging the backsplash and back wall, and directs the vented heat straight into the hood vent above. Logical, safe, and effective design!

GE Profile makes free-standing ranges with stovetop controls in front, oven controls in back, and a metal shield protecting the oven controls in back from the venting oven heat. I bought their Dual Fuel version.

I just thought I'd mention this free-standing vs. slide-in difference, since it hadn't yet been brought up here.

Nothing looks worse than a beautiful backsplash broken up by range controls.
