I don't understand your timing...that you planted them this summer. It is spring here and planting time is now ..unless you are in the tropics. If the plants are just getting established, pick the flowers off. otherwise they tend to be stunted.

i'm assuming you mean you planted for this summer, not that you planted them in the summer and also expecting berries this summer ;)

they will grow berries in the first year, but will be smaller.. picking off the flowers and runners forces the plant to focus on root growth, which will pay off in the second year with bigger berries.. again, not required, just don't expect golf ball size berries in the first year.
