Which Maytag model did they recommend? I'm not impressed with current Maytag/Whirlpool washers. Build quality is cheap. The inner window on their front loaders is plastic. Everyone else has glass.

The GE is brand new, so reliability is unknown. I looked at it in the store and it seemed nice but I noticed it's made in China. That turned me off. I have used GE front loaders before and found they had trouble balancing and the rinsing was unimpressive.

As long as you are able to keep the door open between loads, you shouldn't have issues with mold in your new machine. If you must close the door while not in use, then the GE might be your best choice.

LG, Miele and Speed Queen make the most reliable washers.

My friend’s LG washer only lasted a few years, and it didn’t get very heavy usage. I wasn’t impressed.

I have not personally used this new generation of Maytag/Whirlpool washers. My experience with the previous generation machines was for the most part really positive. Looking at reviews of the new machines they don't seem to be very well liked. Problems with them breaking down, leaking and not being able to spin are the common issues.

Check out the LG WM4370HKA or the LG WM3900. Those would be my recommendations. I have two family members with the 4370 and they love their machines. The are great at cleaning, gentle and have proven to be very reliable under heavy use (one is used in a house with 6 adults). The 3900 is very highly rated by Consumer Reports and the Wirecutter. And Consumer Reports says LG makes the most reliable washers. They come to that conclusion by surveying actual owners, so there is hard data to back that claim.

I have lg right now. and I am very happy with it, besides that the rubber is full of mold and STINKS. I really try when the machine is not in use, to keep the door open, but don't think that helps. appliance store was telling me , that this maytag shouldn't have this issue.

also they were saying that LG and maytag is the same company. just LG parts come from Europe and maytag, is usa . so if i'll need repair, maytag will be here next day.

I am still pulling for the LG. but have one issue with the rubber

Ok, the very first thing you need to do is find a different store to shop at because LG and Maytag are definitely NOT the same company! LG is a Korean company and Maytag is owned 100% by Whirlpool Corp., an American company. Where do they find these horrible salespeople???

You can have a stinky boot with any brand washer. You are not going to like hearing this but most of these mold/stink issues are a result of user error and can be avoided. Overdosing detergent and doing too many cold water washes creates the ideal environment for mold/mildew growth.

You can probably salvage your LG. First start doing a deep clean by using the tub clean cycle with 1 cup of regular Clorox bleach. Then get some Clorox bleach bathroom cleaner and spray down the boot really good, let it soak for about 10 minutes and scrub the boot. Wear some rubber cleaning gloves so you don't destroy your hands in the process.

After you do this deep clean, start using more hot water washes and use no more than 1 pod or 2 tablespoons of detergent per load. You will begin to notice your clothes are cleaner and fresher and softer. You should also try to do one hot load of whites a week with bleach. Or run your washer's tub clean cycle with a cup of bleach once a week for at least a month. And also remove the drain filter and your dispenser drawer and give those both a good scrub with the bathroom cleaner.

I'm a little curious about your laundry routine...What cycles and temps do you typically use? What brand and how much detergent do you use?

I couldn't be happy with a machine that is "full of mold and STINKS" :o Have you considered a top loading machine and leaving the lid up when not in use? All I've ever had is top loading machines (40 years) and have never had an odor problem. I've also always kept the lid open and use plenty of hot water wash cycles.

well, i have 5 little kids. and yes there clothes need to washed often and in hot water. i will try to clean with bleach, and all the instructions. but definitely think its time for the company's to come up with a better solution. this is a true pain in the neck. thank you all for your advice

I didn't know that until you told me a couple of months ago! I also think you told me that keeping the lid open and using plenty of hot water washes and POWDER detergents will keep it from happening. I do the first two but hadn't used powders in years. I'm now using powder and loving it. Tide original and Tide w/ Bleach

“there clothes need to washed often and in hot water.”

Whatever washer you get, make sure it has an onboard heater. That will heat the water to a higher temperature than the water coming into the washer will be. Your home’s water heater is limited in temperature to prevent scalding. On top of that, the water gets even colder as it travels from your home’s water heater through cold pipes (in winter, ice cold). So, without an internal water heater in the washing machine, you won’t get very hot water in your washing machine.

Because of that, I do not agree with the above recommendations for Speed Queen, because Speed Queen washing machines do not have onboard heaters. Also the new Speed Queens are a different design from before, and supposed to be not as good as previously.

I would recommend an LG or a Whirlpool. You can tell the ones that have an onboard heater because they will show a “Sanitary” and/or “Allergen” wash mode. Don’t spend money on fancy colors; a white washer is just fine.

I run the "Basket Clean" cycle once a month with a Cascade dishwasher pod and add an additional one gallon of water through the detergent drawer once the cycle is underway. The detergent drawer and door gasket always get wiped dry and the door is kept ajar when the machine is not in use. NEVER have odor problems. (Front loading GE)

I'm very pleased with my new LG top loader, the 7900 top-of-line model. I have a 10-year-old Maytag Bravos at the other house, it doesn't handle unbalanced loads at all. I've had the LG for 2 months now and haven't had an unbalanced load yet. There are lots of options which can be selected for customized cycles.

One thing I forgot to mention earlier was to consider switching your laundry detergent to a powder such as Tide. Powder detergents leave less residue and also contain oxygen bleach which helps keep the interior of your washer cleaner. And go easy on fabric softeners.

Dianne: Can you add extra water to the cycle? Does the water go over the clothes?

Chimchim - Absolutely yes, there's a water plus selection option and I use that all the time. Water definitely covers the load and the auto sensing is excellent. I haven't tried all the cycles yet. The bedding cycle doesn't have the water plus as an option but that cycle puts plenty of water over the load. I've had zero problems with the LG 7900 top loader, best washer I've ever owned and I'm very picky and demanding about laundry.
