I wouldn't go 'modern' in your traditional house. Why don't you search for 'transitional', this will help you find middle ground. Without photos of the adjoining rooms it's hard to make any suggestion.

I find it’s really helpful to see the item in a room. If you search two story foyers on Pintetest or Houzz and look for a room similar to yours, you will get a feel of styles and the appropriate size. Makes it easier to make a decision when ready to purchase.
