They aren't discontinued. Whirlpool has several models.

My month old Maytag Deep Fill came with matching dryer and it has a 'hamper' style door, opens downward. I'm trying to resist using it to fold. I don't need to, I have a folding counter but somehow its tempting and I've got a feeling putting weight on the door every load may not be in my best interest....as in, early door failure.

I really like hamper door dryers, too. I plunk the wet laundry out of the washer onto the hamper door & then shake it out to feed into the dryer. Hamper door dryers don't care which side your washer is on, either. My top load washer is technically on the wrong side, the right side, of the dryer. The washer lid opening is only a minor annoyance when paired w/ hamper door dryer.
