How to expand shower with window in the way?

We are planning to rip out our soaking tub and then make the shower enclosure spectacular. Currently it’s about 3’ x 3’ and we were thinking of going 5’ x 5’ but the window that looks out to a scenic backyard is in the way. Any ideas how to work around that without having to redo all of the windows?

Maybe a doorless shower where the door is where your tub is now? As long as spray won't hit the window it could possibly work. Although to do it right even just that bit of window should have waterproofing like it's fully in the shower.

Can you replace the window with a transom type that is higher up on the wall. Like this one that is in the shower area?

The window overlooks our pool, so we’d like to have the nice view if possible.

Is there a window in the shower now (where the shampoo bottles are)? I've got a window in my shower (10 year now). It's high enough that no one can see anything you don't want them to. I also almost never clean it. It's high enough that it doesn't get dirty.

Unless it's really high, it's a problem waiting to happen in terms of leakage. Bite the bullet and move, shrink, or re-position that window. Don't try to incorporate it into your shower space.

You could build your shower larger like you have it taped out. And you could still have a decent sized window if you replace the current one with a smaller one. Also, if you want a dressing/make up table there, you’d have all that natural light which is nice. My dressing/make up/writing table is in my bedroom, in front of a window which looks out to yard and pool. It’s a nice place to be and be natural light is good for make up. Windows are pricey, but if it gets you a large shower, and it’s maybe 1k or so on top of your whole remodel price, it’s a relatively small incremental increase in budget and could be very much worth it to you. Hypothetically if you spend 51,500 instead of 50,000, but you get your dream shower and preserve your view, that seems like a good plan for a small % increase. In my town a large replacmement window with new header/framing would be about 1k for the window but I don’t know how to estimate brick or siding work.

Is it possible to move your toilet? It can be pricey and sometimes not possible. You’d have to ask a plumber or contractor. Depends on foundation, joists, etc.

Frosted glass could provide privacy if blinds are not enough. The waterproofing around the window is what could be pricy.

The pic posted by judianna20 brings to mind the possibility of two shower doors -- one in front and one over your window -- something that might well make no sense at all to the pros.

Since the door is at one end of the room, could you move all your plumbing fixtures to set against the interior wall rather than the exterior wall and have your walk space in front of the window in the outside wall rather than on the other side of your tub/shower enclosure?

Otherwise, short of the expense of incorporating the window entirely within the shower, you'll likely need to shrink the width of the window.

this was my suggestion if the window is kept. unless there is a tall house next door, this should be private enough. you can still see out when you're in the shower.

We had the same issue, ended up expanding the shower in the other direction(to the front) we had to move a door, but it was totally worth it.

@sarachatfield, can you share images of how you ended up expanding your shower? I have a similar situation and am looking for ideas.

I have the same issue and would love to see and know how any of this turned out. Or what anyone else has done...
