Optimum Window and Torrance Steel are the two companies I am most familiar with that will make Fire Rated Residential windows.

Be aware that the 45-60 minute is not a requirement if you are building within the wildfire zone. That is a requirement where fire resistant windows and glass are asked for (on the property line etc.).

It may have changed as I am now retired but fire resistant is one piece of tempered and the other standard annealed glass. Most every window and door company can meet that requirement whereas the 45-60 rule requires (usually) a steel window thus millworkman's suggestion of Optimum and Torrance. Hope Windows in New York is another. Steel = extended lead time and expensive.

So you are saying there is no way to meet the 45 minutes rating without steel? We cannot do this with aluminum? Our house burned in a CA wildfire and it faces a canyon and has glass walls along the back. Obviously, a bit nervous about windows in the rebuild. What do you suggest?

Check and be sure that you are in a 45-60 minute requirement. That means steel and fire resistant glass. It seems that most of (if not all) the "fire zone glass" is not that stringent.

Local codes can supersede state and national regulations.

Very true East Bay. And Pamela, typically all fire rated would be steel. A few commercial guys do aluminum fire rated (super heavy as it is aluminum filled with type x drywall), but I am not aware of any residential aluminum products being fire rated.
