Interior Door Meaning

Can someone explain what S-4, S-5 and R-1, R-2 means when purchasing an interior door? I have this on a quote and I cannot figure it out. Thanks.

Ask the people that gave you the quote. I know that is not any fun, but it will be the most accurate.

I will definitely tomorrow, thank you. But I really want to know now...lol.

    Impossible to tell without context.

It may refer to the occupancy rating of the space for which the door serves as egress, but that's not typically a consideration for interior doors in the residential code.

They might be the manufacturer's codes for stile and rail profiles or dimensions. At any rate they're almost certainly unique to the manufacturer. They might also denote the direction of swing, core material, design pattern or latch edge bevel, etc.

Your quote should describe the door in plain language so the codes shouldn't matter.

They don’t know what the code means. I just asked. They told moms not to worry about it. It has to do with the hinges I am pretty sure. I have the stop annotated, undercut, hinge size and color, jamb size, door height and width, blackest. I can’t figure this out.

Again without seeing the quote and where it is listed it is impossible for anyone to offer anything in the way of advice. It HAS to mean something or it would not be there.

It could reference a door schedule on the plans or could refer to a manufacturers model. Doesn't look like any code my supplier uses.

@Millworkman I agree with you. But they don’t know, so I don’t know. I just called Masonite directly and they don’t know either. I will try another lumberyard I guess.

Most likely it's the door classification you find in codebooks and in which occupancy Group this door can be used as an example

    Entrance Door In A Means Of Egress Group A, B, E, I-2, M, R-1 or R-2, etc

Not sure what Group S-4 or S-5 is, but Group S-1 occupancy is for Moderate-Hazard Storage, and Group S-2 is for Low-Hazard Storage.

Are you comparing quotes or just looking at one? Many times, an individual has his/her own way of writing it up at time of initial takeoff. There is generally a time lapse from quote to order on larger orders and these can be notes used as a time saver later. Just a thought.

Where on the quote are these codes? In the description? Post a snap shot maybe we can offer help that way as I stated if they did not mean something they would not be there. Context may help.

R-2 was changed to an S-4

Bilgewater Doors huh? Dammit I used to know what that meant. Give me a few minutes.

@Millworkman. They’re Masonite. Thank you for your help.

"R-2" is written between the hinges and the door frame so it might be the door knob.

#2 is usually a passage/closet latchset and #4 is usually an entry/office lock.

It might also be 2 regular hinges changed to 4 spring hinges.

It might help to tell us where the door is located and if it has a special function.

Bridgewater (know in the industry as Bilgewater) was the wholesaler previously but Masonite has since purchased them. The only thing I can think is it may be an internal code that tells them what machine is doing the prehanging.

@RES2 no special function. No spring hinges. I asked another lumber yard they don’t know either. I am assuming it has to do with the hinges too because of the location in the quote. I don’t remember ever seeing this on past quotes, so I perplexed.

There are no occupancy groups in the International Residential Code other than one and two family dwellings and townhouses.

There is a hinge secret code for the radius R = 1/4", R2 = 5/32" and R5 = 5/8" not sure about S-4 etc. Let the wild speculation continue....

    If R1 = 1/4; R2 = 2/4; R3 = 3/4; etc.

    @RES2,

Sorry, but it's not an infinite series problem from high school math. Although if it were, it could have been taught where Joseph Corlett got his schooling. Here's a link to a manufacturer's website which decodes the radius code:

    https://pbbinc.com/products/

    Page down until you see the "round corners" suffix R= 1/4" R2 = 5/32" and R5 = 5/8"

Now let's concentrate on figuring out the "S" part....

No, but I am hoping the pinot noir pairs well with the chili.
