Not sure what varieties if any would do well in a shady location. I'd be leery of planting them near a tree line as the tree roots would quickly grow up into the bed and suck the life out of the asparagus crowns. Asparagus does not compete well with weeds and trees would be even worse.

I had that problem with one of my horseradish beds that was about 40' away from a tree line. It did fine there for a few years but after a couple years of finding more tree roots in the bed than horseradish roots I had to move it another 20 yards further away from the tree line.

Asparagus is a full sun plant. Will perform best with 8+ hours but can tolerate some partial shade......the more shade it receives, the less productive it will be. No varieties are recommended for full shade.

Since it takes time for an asparagus bed to become productive and it will remain so for 20-25 years, this is a more or less permanent placement. You want to pick the best possible location. Asparagus dislikes competition - that's why it gets its very own bed :-) Will not tolerate weeds or roots and since it needs a well composted or enriched planting bed, any nearby tree roots will be drawn to it. Make sure it is well away from any tree line......roots travel a long way !
