oursteelers..thank you!..in hindsight planting Clausa in front was a mistake..it's unruly!..I love that my other hosta are large but don't run wild..Krossa Regal looks much prettier without Clausa crowding it..

if its normalis i will buy some from you. do the flowers open?

Steve beat me to it. My sister used boiling water from a tea kettle to kill grass in a tough spot but it requires many more repetitions than round up. She kept at it, at least weekly, for two years and got a lot of it.

peren..thanks for the compliment!..I'm sure I recovered my purchase price for Clausa..would've sold more if I'd hidden the mass spread from the customers..they saw it and it scared them off Lol..should've parked our truck next to them..

NW, do you have a root slayer? It's very helpful getting at roots. I know that feeling that your hostas show and look so much better without all that groundcover. When I dug out my ajuga, I remembered seeing a photo of the before and I couldn't believe that I could hardly see my hostas from across the street. Happy digging with whatever you use!

debra..and to compound the problem the roots are under my stepping stones and in river rock..I didn't buy the stepping stones or river rock..they were in back when I moved in....I had the idea to create a path in front and reuse them..in my opinion the river rock's a mistake..the river rocks help seeds germinate, make weeding harder and it looks better without it..so I'm removing the river rock..a neighbor wants it..we have a garden claw and it's been good for breaking up soil and loosening roots..but we'll need to remove the stepping stones and river rock to use it sigh..

this is what I get when I pull..the roots stay and the crown snaps off..I tried to get my thumb in the pic for scale..it's very similar in size..

it's great to be able to walk through almost normally..

I was wondering what other hostas have this trait..I don't have Lemon Lime but I've read it's a good spreader..is it similar to Clausa?..

'Lemon Lime' is a good grower but it is not stoloniferous.

Wow, NW………such hard work. sometimes the best ideas just dont seem to work out like we imagine. I have a few nuisances in my gardens. the worst is a tiny sedum that grows and spreds everywhere. the bad thing is i never planted it here. ive given up controling it, just glad its tiny and doesnt interfere with any other plant‘s growth. if you want to know my plant nuisance list, just ask.

Nw, yes you do have your work cut out for you. But what garden isn't a lot of work? After so many years of gardening, one would think that us gardeners would know just about everything, but something like that pops up and creates a lot of work. I have faith that you will be able to achieve your goal.

In regards to the river rock, we've added river rock around our home and rather like it. Perhaps there are so many seeds because the river rock is not thick enough? My husband has a sprayer and now and then he just sprays a bit of some kind of weed killer on the odd weed, and it's done! A blower helps too.

Debra, I am thinking about what you said about removing your ajuga and your garden looked so much better. I was thinking about whether I should do that with my lamium. The lamium in my backyard is a bit leggy and seems to spread too much. Now if I removed a lot of it, I think my garden would look better too. I think the slugs wouldn't be that happy about it! LOL Fortunately, it looks like it's a lot easier to remove than clausa!

newhostalady..is my lamium the same one you have?..your description fits mine..from my own experience you're right..lamium is easier to remove than Clausa..

our river rock isn't thick..we had spaces between our stepping stones and I laid the river rocks in the cracks..I had them on hand and it seemed like a good idea at the time..I think I'm going to prefer just dirt and the weeds I'll get Lol..we'll see..

NW, lamium is on my nuisance list here, it seems to magically appear in a new spot in the spring. I a m going to remove some here. Also on my nuisance list is yellow corydalis and feverfew. The good things about these two is they are easy to remove.

Sherry..I don't have feverfew..I have corydalis but very little..mine hasn't spread much..I removed a lot of winter creeper..they say it's invasive..I didn't like where it was..I see a little now and then and rip it out..

I'll be removing lamium too..it's funny..we plant these plants to avoid weeds and end up with a bigger problem than the weeds..

Wowser , I better get mine out before it gets crazy. They did warn me to plant where I never wanted anything else. Almost as bad as lily of the valley is to get rid of or creeping jenny that I am fighting now. God help you if you drop a piece even on the lawn it grows

Faye..yes..I started too late..sigh..compared to Clausa and lamium my lily of the valley and creeping jenny aren't crazy..it seems as if I have too many spreading plants..
