Need Help Accessorizing Entry Chest

last modified: 4 years ago

I have a vintage chest with a marble top measuring (30" long, 18" deep, 29" tall) in my small front entrance that I just don't know how to accessorize. I am not sure what to use or how to decorate the wall behind the chest. We rarely use the front door preferring to enter and exit through the kitchen entrance by the garage so I don't need storage space. The entrance space is quite small measuring 8' x 6'. The wall behind the chest is 8' long. Opposite the open front door is a coat closet and opposite the hutch is an open stair leading to the basement level. The chest is an inherited piece with sentimental value that I plan to keep. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Pics would be helpful as I have difficulty visualizing ideas.

I'm still looking for the "hutch" you mentioned, but the coffee picture looks like it should be in the kitchen or near your coffee bar. I would hit some antique shops with a photo of your chest in hand and see if you can find a mirror of the same era as it. Be sure the mirror measures within 75% of the chest's width.

Beautiful chest. Agree with other art. Since the chest is on the smaller size, maybe a tall (but not too tall) skin lamp, low flat basket or bowl and an inbetween size plant. Be sure to leave about half of the marble visible. Since the chest is small, I would do a grouping of two or three framed pieces over the chest... like this:

I don't think I want to use a mirror as it would reflect mostly the stairwell.

Although you say you don't use the front entrance, the purpose of a mirror there is to check yourself before going out. It wouldn't be very large or reflect much of the stairwell. Just thinking of maintaining the way the chest would have been paired back in the day.

Here is picture of a drop-leaf table in my front entry that was styled using items I had on had, but it might give you some ideas. Size is 28" long x 18" wide. Items include brass oriental style lamp, 2 books topped with a seashell & live Tillsandia Bromeliad, and hard to see, a small brown stone bird (actually a door stop which we use in the fall and spring when we frequently leave the front door open for fresh air flow). Tall black & white Ansel Adams print adds height to the mix.

Not wild about the coffee print, looks cheap and out of place. I have found incredible artwork at estate sales, flea markets, and even at Goodwill. Start there with some color.

I agree with Allison0704. I think the key is harmonizing the area. It is small with lots going on; there's the door, the bureau in dark wood with marble, the wall with picture, the plant, etc and everything is in different colours and textures. You mentioned the bureau is very important to you so I would start with that and figure out the rest. Perhaps put nothing on the wall but a place a larger, taller ornament, such as a vase or sculpture on the table. Good luck.

I agree, the coffee print is out of place - more suitable for a dining area or coffee bar. These three entryway pictures can be scaled down to fit your area.

The first one you can replace the mirror with a picture or use a smaller size "antiqued" one that reflects light but looks like the silver is wearing through so there's not a clear reflection. The second one can be places of interest, places you've traveled too, or family photos. The third one mixes pictures and collectibles (they have street signs and clocks).

I really think the problem is "not enough" to look cohesive. Good luck!

The little chest is very pretty - looks to be American mid-19th century, This is a country piece, so keep your choice of artwork simple. The marble top has been added. The print over it is too big and not the best subject for an entry hall. Look for something smaller. A small lamp would be nice - after you select new artwork. Your entry hall is small, so keep it simple. At the most, 2 smaller pictures hung one over the other.

What about a cute circle mirror with a small/skinny vase plant and small dish/basket to hold keys, or trinkets

Do to scale. Keep simple- good luck

I love Alisons suggestion with the 3 stacked prints. Here’s a slightly different version. This entry table is wider, but I like the combination of baskets, plants & prints.

Maybe something like a mirror with a wall hatrack over it, or even a mirror, and then add a standing coat rack to soften the corner. There are some really nice antique ones with a lot of personality, and it looks like you've got the space. If you feel like adding a bit of excitement to the space, you could consider painting the mirror frame a fun color, like turquoise or teal.

I think that is better. The tones in the picture are very nice with the wood. Not crazy about the plant. Planter looks white but the matting on the pic looks like cream. Maybe move it to the side, perhaps a different planter in a more organic material, like a wicker.

I agree about the planter material. Is it also too large in scale?

I don't think the plant is too large. Pushed off to the side it will give some nice height and softness.
