Leave it alone... Nothing is wrong with the stairs unless money burns a hole in your pocket and you don't have anything else you can spend on... the sky is the limit on what you can do... Do you have a certain look you want? Certain types of railing? Carpet runner? etc.

I was also wondering if the present rails match my new door.

The railings and the panels on the side of the stairs seem to match really well with the ceiling in the other room . I would leave them alone. The stairs themselves look great. IF they are in good condition, leave them be. What is underneath the laminate on the steps? Is it just plywood steps or do you actually have oak treads? If you have oak treads and have some money to burn, you can have them stained and paint the risers for a different look.

But leaving them alone is just fine!

I would install hardwood. stained on treads, risers either painted white or stained. and a runner. Real, not engineered.

I like the idea of installing hardwood on the stairs. The hand rail and wall stringer are real wood and can be sanded and re-stained. Do you all think the metal balusters should be left the color of the wood or should I paint them the color of the front door?

Have to be careful when installing wood on stairs, the stairs could easily become not code compliance if it's not done right.
