I grow mine for the smell which I adore, even though I have all the problems you do (although my thrips aren't quite so bad)

Clearly you aren't enchanted though, so yes find a new rose!

Would you be willing to use a spray like spinosad to get rid of the thrips? `If not, and Mme A looks bad every year, I’d replace her with a variety the thrips don’t attack so much.

smilingspring Thank you a million for posting those honest pics. of Mme A. I cross it out from my wish-list. Princess Charlene de Monaco is the top 10 scents among my 150 fragrant own-root roses. Bolero is decent on thrips, same with Sonia Rykiel and James Galway. Below is PcDM and James Galway (need partial shade), but PcDM can take full-sun:

I find thrips don’t like the darker colors or thicker petals. `Some roses with those traits and great fragrance include Firefighter, Neptune, Neil Diamond, Fragrant Cloud.

Get your shovel out and give the 'Madame,' what she deserves....good riddance to bad rubbish!

Kordes, like any other of the rose breeding establishments has produced some exceptional roses. They have also introduced real, 'dogs...bow-wows.' I cannot tell you how many Kordes roses I have tried, and ended up giving the heave-ho. Yet, my Kordes Quicksilver has proven to be phenomenal. A cast iron, super charged blooming fool of a rose is just how I begin to describe it.

Don't beat yourself up for doing the deed. It comes with rose gardening. Believe me, you will look back and increasingly feel good vibes in knowing that you did the right thing.

It's been about seven painstaking years that Madame Hardy and Autumn Damask have been horrible beyond description, attacked by trips and a chore to deal with. But I couldn't let them go.

Sadly, no. I just view it as a spring bloomer. Occasionally maybe in fall, too.

But then most of them don't repeat bloom when we're in the 100s, that's why my list of ones that do is so special!

I shovel prune anything that bugs me, literally.

I am old so I am not wasting time and energy on a dud when I can try something new.

A couple of my thrip free roses are Sweet Mademoiselle , Fiji, Hot Cocoa, all reds and my purples.

Now you have the fun of choosing a new rose. What fun is that!

Hope that you can remove the beast without hurting your back.

Hot cocoa has been on my wishlist for a bit, I’m moving away from the lighter colors and loving my reds more and more! Thank you!

No fortunately, thrip pressure is very light here in my Pittsburgh, PA, garden, zone 6b, hot, relatively wet, and humid summers, to -5°F winter lowest average, with black spot the worst disease, and rose midge fly the worst insect, 2nd. come spider mites. That's not to say that a rose garden down the street from me will have the same set of issues as mine does. Every rose garden has its unique set of assets and liabilities.

Divide and conquer. Take your time. Be mindful of the weather, no need to get heat exhaustion over, 'Her Madameship,' she's done enough damage to your mind and soul, don't let her get to your body.

I just read somewhere on this forum that what we may not realize when we get a rose that isn't performing, is that it is probably a bad plant and if you take cuttings from it they are strong like the original. I think this makes so much sense after all these years of rose gardening and blaming myself, lol! I 'm wondering if this is the case here because those photos look nothing like Madame Anisette.
