I personally would not. But I am planting in other stuff after I pull the garlic, I just started seed inside recently to do so. Carrots, beets, radishes, some small greens. Fast enough to pull harvest before resetting the bed in the fall.

If it's only one row of garlic, maybe you could plant the beans just to the side of where the garlic was.

Although everyone seems to say it, I've never seen any explanation for why garlic is supposed to be specifically bad for beans, so if someone has that info, it would be useful to know. Garlic is a heavy feeder, so it might well deplete the soil of some nutrients. But that's just a matter of fertilizing properly.

Hard to find any actual research, but I think the idea is that the pungency of the onion group suppresses bean/ legume root growth, and garlic is very pungent.

When the garlic has been totally cleared out, I would just plant the beans. If you can, plant a second small row of beans in a non garlic area for comparison. Report back if the garlic bed beans had any problems.

Thanks for all the replies! Until I read this claim about garlic I didn't have any worry at all about what I planted where. lol! Like I said, my planting space is small... if I had known this, I would have planted some things differently. When the garlic comes out it will leave an empty planting area that's about 2' wide and 12' long. The perfect spot for my green beans! :)
