I’m sure she means well... but she does not know about the Feng Shui of this. And most importantly - you placed your daughter’s bed on that other wall. Your house/your daughter/your rules. And you absolutely know what you are doing. Your original placement is right. 👌

Thank you for your reassurance!! I def doubt myself and my mother in law is a take control kinda person! I told my daughter she was excited about all the great ideas abs she wants to move her bed back to the wall now! Lol

If her bed originally was on another wall, presumably you've determined that she can, in fact, sit up in bed without hitting her head? If so, the window wall could become good storage if you move the bed elsewhere. I'd be reluctant to invest in built-ins (will the HVAC be up to keeping the attic room comfortable all four seasons? Is she going to go off to college in 2 years?) But IKEA has many storage options, and I'd bet you could flank the window with tall wardrobe units of a suitable width, and place dresser height units in between/alongside depending on your dimensions. Plain white furniture won't be "Boho" but she could add fairy lights, artwork, etc. to give it some character.

Yes I think her head will be ok by the wall her bed fits very comfortably in the curve so I think it will be fine. The house is brand new and has dual zone units. We were worried it would be too hot but she was actually very comfortable there. I saw the built in ideas on Pinterest and I LOVEEEE them but my husband doesn’t want to spend the money to have someone build them. 😢 he’s only somewhat handy lol. I’ve even seen built ins where instead of building INTO the attic they build OUT. So there’s a ledge at the height of the wall slope. Then they added drawers and a wardrobe rod. I think that would be easier for him to try himself. Plus it would be perfect to hide those small access doors which she hates. But yet they could still be accessible

And yes she’s 15 so college soon enough 😭😭😭😭

There are some cool ideas at this link. Maybe she could scroll through and put her favorites in an ideabook for her room. That will help you understand what she might really like and can keep you two out of any arguments over what her hoped-for style should look like when completed. Be sure and have her write what is she likes about each saved pic; there is place to do that as she saves them. You'll get an idea about what to keep your eye open for when shopping. You never know when a great piece of something she likes will pop up and you can surprise her with it. Knowing you're on the same page will make this more fun for both of you.

Can you please draw a floorplan showing measurements and doors, window, etc. so that we're able to make a layout and suggestions. Perhaps also indicate the ceiling height where appropriate.

I'd put a rug on the floor, give her a bunch of 3M command strips to hang her pics wherever she wants them and she can move them when she changes her mind. If she wants to have a mega 3rd floor bedroom to herself (I'd have loved that as a teen but my brother beat me to it) then she has to live with a rolling wardrobe rack. It is a great life opportunity for her to learn about sacrificing somethings to get other things that you want.

Anything else she wants, let her play around with moving furniture, setting things up her way. She is old enough to have the leeway to set up her space as she wants. It is such a low stakes way to give a teenager freedom.

Yes I love all of these ideas. You all have been so helpful!!!! I’ve been stressing about it since we moved in and you have given me such great ideas I think we can finally make it fun! I will work on a layout with measurements tomorrow! The more help the better!

What attic bathroom goes with this room she has chosen??!

There is no reason I can see, that this can't instead become a very cool hangout, her personal space to have friends, have tv......whatever! But any relative good looks? That means a place for clothes and grooming clutter. You don't have it here,. Take one of the other bedrooms - for bed, clothes, make up!

Then? Her version of something as below. A platform, a couple cheap twin mattresses ( Costco ) a bunch of pillows ......etc . Her personal "family room".

My point is sleep, dress, make up......elsewhere. You have the luxury of options, as does DD. This below? How fun! No junk and clothes all over!

I'd have KILLED for my own "living room" at that age, far from sisters and parents!

Or just let her have at this space and then close your eyes. Because there is really no place to put anything for storage, unless you BUILD it. After which you have reduced normal standing space to very little. I can SEE the mattress leaning on the wall and guess 66" max.

PS....... The very last thing to "stress" about is a teen room in the attic. I bet DD is not the least stressed. Show us all your spaces. You know,..... the grown up stuff: )

Having just gone through a room redo with my 15 year old I highly recommend letting your child drive all the decisions. We bought a lovely new bed and set it up and then it was rejected. We attempted decor that the teen said was good and then it was rejected. I’m now fully on the it’s not my room let them decide bandwagon. I mean within reason of course but they sleep there not me.

Jinx it’s full on dorm room chic. Box spring on the floor and mattress on top. Teen rotates it as they want and has pictures on walls. Teen happy so I’m happy and sold bed for what I paid so only thing lost was my sanity and time!

Jan how do you know there isn’t a bathroom right across the hall or out of the photo? Even if there isn’t are you really suggesting the only way a bedroom can ever work is if there is a bathroom right near it? Sure that’s ideal but it’s not the end of the world

More importantly up here , there will be a lot of built in work to make adequate clothes storage. Or live with lots on the floor.

Jan, no one said ensuite needed. Not you nor I. And I’m hardly designing my home for a once an a blue moon flu or vomit fest. That said teens are pretty good at making it to a toilet

Our master suite is an attic space slightly narrower than this room. We have the bed against the long wall, under the slanted ceiling. Our knee wall height is a bit shorter than yours but it is quite sufficient for my 6 foot tall husband. We mounted the television on the slanted portion of the ceiling opposite the bed. That decision was made early enough that we were able to add an outlet at the correct location. 

Storage is a challenge in that space. Our hanging items are in a closet by the staircase and everything else is shelving or cupboards built into the knee wall space. Previous owners had a large closet built along the knee wall but we removed it. The room looked wrong with the walls being different heights and different spacing from the window. 

This room would look cute with a pair of closets flanking the window and a built in desk or window seat between them. However, that is probably more involved than desired unless your daughter wants to tackle the DIY project.

@JAN MOYER My (now) husband and I lived in a rental apartment for ten years where we had to cross the house and go down a set of stairs to reach the bathroom from the bedroom. There were lots of other reasons that apartment was a great deal and once we got used to it we barely thought about it (although now we own our own home with a bathroom just across the hall from our bedroom it feels like a glorious luxury). We were there through most of our 20s and yes, there was some post-party barfing. We managed. I don't think the bathroom on a different floor is a big deal at all.

I too would have been THRILLED with this space as a teen! I agree with the bed on a side wall rather than under the window and i love the idea of fabric draping from the sloped ceiling like a canopy. My teenage taste would have painted the walls a dark colour and had a bunch of twinkle lights and rock band posters plus a hangout area with beanbags and lounge-y cushions/couch-y things low to the floor over near the window.

Yes! Well we just painted today she chose a very subtle creamy white color surprisingly! It was called shaved coconut. She doesn’t seem to mind having to go downstairs for the bathroom

Y’all make me laugh’ trust me if my daughter was gonna barf she’d be in my room waking me up loooooong before! In fact she suffers from bad anxiety and emetaphobia (the extreme fear of vomiting) we don’t even speak that word in this house lol! There is no bathrokm up there but she has not complained at all about it. She loves having her own private space! We had a blast together today painting…dancing…. Singing ….talking! She chose a creamy white color called shaved coconut. Very soft and neutral. We are going to take your advice and move the bed to the side wall, tv and dresser opposite side wall and I’m going to get her macrame curtains I saw on Amazon and put curtain fairy lights in it. And for Xmas I found cute macrame chairs I’d like to get her two of them to put by the window and maybe a cute boho rug. My husband made her a wooden bench for the foot of her bed. She loved the idea about the tapestry coming over the bed. Just have to find a nice one. Still need to find a solution for the ugly clothes rack. Maybe just something prettier. I also love the idea of flanking the sides of window with storage but that will come in time.

These the chairs I found I think they’d go perfectly. I’d love one of the swings instead but I don’t think my husband wants to put it in the ceiling the house is brand new so he’s being like a protective house dad! Lol

I love macrame curtains — I have one in my bathroom, and got my DD one for her apt. She still likes for mom to help decorate.

Thank you jinx! It will be beautiful. (And expensive!) but we had fun today! And she’s happy. She worked really hard cleaning up and trying to get organized too! We are finally on a roll.

Ok so macrame over the bed and I need to check the size of the chairs. I did read reviews and they said tgey can hold up to 200 lbs. but I’m going to double check the dimensions. So do you think the macrame tapestry will be ok draped over the bed without the bottom tassels hanging all funky?

For an ok draping over rod, what about a duvet cover? has a somewhat wide outer edge seam.

Some are reversible - the small awning portion could 'show' pattern on the reverse side.
