So sorry to hear about your friend. Take your time, don't worry if you change what she started. My sister and I inherited all of our mom's stuff in 2021 and it will take us YEARS to get through it all! Most of her quilts were donated to charity, so we figure any part of it we use to that end is something she would have approved of!

Thanks, Sue. I needed that permission. Last night, I spent about 20 minutes starting to applique a block to a background square. I think I made about 3 inches of progress. At that rate, I would be done in a year or so. I can't imagine how long it took to hand sew all those hexies together by hand.

These will be machine appliqued. She gave me her county fair blue ribbon quilt a couple of years before she passed, so I have a quilt that she hand appliqued.

Losing a good friend tears at your heart forever. I'm sure she would be pleased that you are finishing her work though. What a way to best honor her! Please post pictures, we would all love to see them.

Sorry to hear about your friend, but so glad her daughter remembered you and offered her supplies. I'm sure she would be pleased to know you are finishing her tops for her. We would love to see your progress on them.

Im so sorry about the loss of your friend, Bkay. How nice of her daughter to remember you with such a gift. I can see that even though you appreciate the gift, it could possibly become a burden if you try to finish all her quilts. I could see that happening to me. Enjoy using her supplies, and finish what you enjoy doing. Don't feel an obligation to finish everything. We will all leave unfinished work when we die, and no one should feel obligated to finish it for us. I'm sure your friend would want you to find joy using her stash, not leave you feeling obligated.

Char suggested photos, so I cleared the design wall and hung all the UFO's. I'm glad I did. I see now why she didn't finish them. I didn't have the best light for photos, so the colors look muted.

The Dresden Plates are apparently from 2 or 3 different quilts, as the size varies as does the color schemes. (Her County Fair Blue ribbon quilt is a Dresden plate (soft greens and yellows), so these might have been her first few attempts to find something she liked.

One of the machine applique group didn't make it. There was one more block, but it's not here. There are no matching fabrics for the green. I suppose you could make a small throw if you sashed it. It's a quilt as you go, so I would have to learn a new skill. One block is too small to use, as well.

This is the Grandmother's Flower Garden group. I just don't like the colors. They don't work well together in my humble opinion.

This one I may finish. It doesn't look like her usual color choices, and is a little simpler than her usual work. It doesn't show her usual attention to quality. At this point, I am not sure she made this. I see the 4 odd blocks, which may be why this was never finished.

As I said, my lighting is terrible, so, the colors don't show well. It's a navy blue 30's print. There is an extra block which indicates this may have started out to be an Irish Chain. I could use the extra block to fix those four oddball blocks. At this point, I'm ambivalent.

What this had done for me is to remember all the UFO's I have. That might be a better use for my time.

A lot of decisions to make, bkay. Try and keep it as fun as you can. If one block is too small, use it anyway and add some more different blocks to make it scrappy and make it fun. Smile and think of your friend while working on it..

I'd make a 9-block with the applique, use the matching one as a companion piece or on the back, and find a separate project for the little one. The more ambitious project would be to make two more blocks (if you have the green), and then use the little one on the back. Or, you could make a 5x4 and alternate with something else ...
