TimberTech (Vintage, Legacy, Landmark) vs Trex (Transcend)

Hi,

We will be replacing our wood deck and enlarging it slightly. We will be using some type of PVC/composite decking. We have a contractor who is recommending TimberTech and has provided samples for Vintage, Legacy and Landmark.

  • TimberTech Advanced PVC (Vintage, Landmark) vs. Composite (Legacy). I am leaning towards the Vintage Coastline color.

However, I have read recommendations on this forum for Trex Transcend but I have not seen any samples of this.

We have 2 dogs and one concern is scratches. Any thoughts on which would resist dog nail scratches the best?? Maybe a non-factor?

I would love to hear feedback / recommendations about any of the above.

Thanks!

What did you decide to do and are you pleased? We are deciding between the same two products for our home.

Hi! i have decided on the Vintage based mostly on colors. I am going with Coastline and Dark Hickory. We are just in the blueprint/permit stage now though so TBD on the actual result!

The coastline is the one we are looking at, love it! Please keep me posted and good luck with your project.

Hi again, our deck was just finished today! Love the color! I will send pictures as soon as they leave.

UPDATE - If anyone is searching here - one suggestion. The deck feels fine for me but a bit bouncy for my husband (~210lbs). The contractor ensures me it is very strong and the instructions allow for 16" joist spacing (from what I see) for picture frame residential installation. However they do say 12" joist spacing may be preferred (and is required for commercial and/or diagonal installations). Again this is from a brief peruse of some TimberTech material. I would have paid more for the 12" installation if it would have prevented a bouncy feel. I'm sure additional boards/blocking can be added if we feel it's worth it later. It may get better when we put some furniture on the deck.

How have you found the heat retention for the TimberTech? Is it hot in summer and slippery with frost or rain?

@mrsomnifly We have Azek Timbertech on a south-facing deck that's in full sun most of the day. We live in MN. We got one of the more expensive lines for aesthetics, but it also was noted to be one of their "cool touch" products. On really hot days when the deck has been in the sun for hours, it gets a bit hot, but no hotter than a wood deck would be (probably cooler, TBH). I have never NOT been able to walk on the deck in bare feet. Sometimes I have to get into a shady spot quickly (so I can't necessarily STAND on it in bare feet all the time) but it hasn't been so hot it burns. We also have a darker color - either English Walnut or American Walnut, I think. I can't remember the exact product we bought, unfortunately.

Trex does get very hot when in direct sun. We can’t walk barefoot or let our dog on it. Beware if not completely covered and live in hot climate.

@ seosmp, can you share what railing system you used? Is the rail on the stairs comfortable and secure to grip?
