scrape and paint or ship lap boards

Sorry if this message has already posted; don't think it went through earlier.
I'm having popcorn removed from my great room ceiling; also plan to install can lights to replace the old track lighting.
Considering the furnishings, would it look better to simply scrape and paint or have ship lap boards installed?
