The first picture I think are potatoes from this year the second two pictures I think are from last year

I do remove the plant above ground and I definitely do not miss the larger potatoes last year. These would have to be growing larger underground with nothing above ground. For sure I've pulled everything by mid to late August

Doesn't seem likely you would find year old potatoes. Normally, if you leave small potatoes to overwinter in the ground they usually grow new plants in the Spring. If the leftover tubers didn't grow, it would mean they rotted.

There are "scab" diseases, which give them ugly skin. Look up potato scab and compare. Try avoiding growing potatoes in the same spot each year, because disease can linger in the soil.
