They have all been through one winter with me here. The Infinitini and the Berry Dazzle came from Oklahoma. I imagine they get real winter weather out there. Infinitini Purple is hardy for zones 6-9, and Berry Dazzle is hardy for zones 6-10. The Bellini Grape came from right here in Baltimore. It is hardy for zones 5-9. My first Berry Dazzle was a dud plant from a little south of here. The second one, from OK, proved to be a winner. I just didn't want a 15-25' tree here, with all those leaves to rake. Got enough leaves to rake from my neighbor's tree and others in the area. For a treeless yard, I sure get enough blown-in leaves to rake in the fall!

I have a 'Cool Beans' that was very late to leaf out but is now blooming really well- it's a very nice true pink, not a hint of lavender or coral or salmon- just pink!

A seed-grown dwarf crepe myrtle from a Park's seed mix. This one flowers at under a foot tall but eventually plants can reach four feet high and wide. A mature plant has survived -9F without woody dieback.

O, so lovely, Esther. Supposedly, breeding work has been done to create plants which are suitable for the less than stellar UK summer (I think we just cannot offer the heat these plants crave). Every year, I wonder if this is the year I try again.

Hmmm, thinking seed raised plants might be the way forme (v.interesting, Rusty Blackhaw). The only drawback (afaics) is the time invested, (cos ars longa,vita brevis).

We get some summer heat. Not as much as say Columbus or Cincinnati. But we usually get around 81-82 degrees Fahrenheit as a normal high in July. We do get occasional heat waves that can go into the 90s though.

Those seeds are probably just Lagerstroemia indica. Total waste of money and time.

Lagerstroemia that are more hardier are most likely hybrids with Lagerstroemia fauriei.

Regardless of hardiness: many Lagerstroemia cultivars are prone to late spring frost so if you live in a region with late spring frosts protection of the plants is necessary.

Here, Lagerstroemias would leaf out extremely late anyway as Lagerstroemia need lots of heat to start budding and leafing, which we don’t really get until maybe mid may. By then, frost chances have already passed
