IMO I would do a cowhide in front of the soafa with a nice coffee table on it . I do not think ther eis a good way to place an actual rug .I would remove that little table and skooch the sofa dow to be next to the fridge to give the desk some room then you might ba able to get a rug for in front of the sofa. A nice arc lamp in tme corner arched over the coffee table since you need some lighting in there

I think it’s important to address the furniture and accessories before deciding on a rug (size and color wise). The corner table/mirror feel awkward; do you have room for them elsewhere and I would separate them, as mirror is too large for the table.

It’s important to ground that space, so you can centre couch, add art, find the right size/shape coffee table and then look for a rug. With your room’s configuration/adjacent kitchen, I’d look for 4x6 but tape out, also try 6x8 just in case. Look on line at inspiration rooms to help decide on color and style combinations.

^^Agree - a bigger rug is more forgiving as it covers more of the room and doesn't create awkward walkways

then find something big for that back wall

If you use that door ( slider?) frequently I would not try to do a big rectangular rug that either intrudes on that pathway or that you walk on frequently and the rug gets very uneven dirty/ wear. Plus dealing with desk chair, & console. Just a lot of rectangles and not as great for a smaller multipurpose space.

From what I can see of the space, it’d be better not to just follow “ rules” for rugs. Have to think what the space is asking for. Getting a very large rug by the rules is also more expensive without gaining as much impact as a smaller rug, budget for nice ( not $$$) coffee table & maybe an end table/ lamp.

If you're looking for a standard rectangle rug, it would most likely be best to get one that the side table's front feet, the sofa's front feet, and the desk's front feet can fit on. If, however you want to go for a cow hide rug, that might be able to work too. Below are some visuals, from our design's, that might be able to help more. Note the feet of the furniture on the rugs.

Not sure where you ended up with this but I would flip the sofa and the TV/ console to give you more room around your desk. You donnot want a rug under your desk especially with the roller chair. If room, a narrow table behind your sofa you cold place a lamp on each end for reading and ambient lighting. Add coffee table for drinks and such. The rug would then be under the front feet of the sofa and completely under the coffee tabl whichnshoul leave a path to/ from your desk. Window teeatment will be your next project.
