David Austin has apparently now sued four of these sellers. Grounds for removal? I would think so.

From a strictly archivist standpoint, I wouldn't remove the four from the list. I'm really not in favor of removing information unless it's outright incorrect or a lie. If anyone is reading this thread, which clearly asks for input on the listed vendors, presumably they will read all the way down and see the comments.

@susan9santabarbara I can understand that take on it, but I think there's a large number of people who would see the words "we can trust" and just start clicking on the links.

For full visibility I’d prefer an edit with a disclaimer about those shops rather than removing them entirely. There are almost 250 comments at this point and I would imagine most folks who haven‘t been part of the thread since the beginning aren’t going to read all the way through to the latest developments.

Has there been any information on how some Japanese roses entered the US? I wonder if rooted cuttings are sent by mail to a broker with a US address. They grow these out a little then list them on Etsy for sale.

Wish I had learned some of ordering experiences online before, but I did not. I always have great experiences ordering rose bushes on line, especially with David Austin and Heirloom roses companies for years.

Recently I followed a message on Facebook posting and ordered some climbing rose bushes from CGM Ranch rose, but unfortunately, I had a very bad experience with them. The quality of their roses are very small (not like pictures shown on its website) and in poor quality upon receiving them. Two of them did not make it in like a week the first time. As per their policy, they were going to send me the replacements. When I contacted them, they were nice but they did not have the rose bushes in stock and asked me to wait for 6 months. I have been reasonable and waited until I contacted them again 6 months later. They said they did not have the original rose bush available and asked me to pick a different rose, so I did with no other choses. Then they sent me a dead rose bush after a long wait. I contacted them again to ask for a healthy replacement. They refused to talk to me on the phone, nor respond back to my emails. I have ordered rose bushes all the time and I certainly will not be ordering any rose bushes from them again.

I suppose this thread is a good place to ask this question: can anyone tell me from personal experience anything about Cinnabar Bowl Rose? I have been going back and looking at this rose over and over again for at least a year… there’s something about the burnt coral color and the shape of the bloom that almost reminds me of Summer Song, one of my unicorn roses. I can find very little info beyond what the sellers say, but I am tempted to try it unless someone waves a red flag in my face. So please speak up if you have grown it or seen it in person and tell me all you know!

Yes, Diane, I have Double Ambre on order from J&P this spring as well as Double Easy Orange ( Orange Dude), per your recommendation. I’m pretty excited about both of them! But I am also wanting a few dark burnt orange sort of colors in that bed to add some dark for contrast. I have Hot Cocoa already and I looked up Brick House Orange too. That one might be a good fit. Anyone have any experience with that one? I really am concerned about those dark ones turning a nauseating shade of tomato soup orange like my Cinco de Mayo rose gets at times. So I thought someone might be able to tell me if they’ve grown either Cinnabar Bowl or Brick House Orange?

Yes, Diane, I have Desert Sky! I only had it one year and it wasn’t in the best location. I might move it once I have my new Orange bed opened up and ready to plant. Just now it’s a small twiggy looking thing because the javelinas chewed it almost to the ground and then the heat wave of last summer hit just when it was trying to recover. So it’s had a hard row to hoe in its short life and I can’t say how well I like it yet. The blooms are a nice color though, just small.

And btw, your Orange Dude is phenomenal! I hope mine will try its best to look like yours.

This should be a good place to ask. anyone in colder zones growing these etsy roses? A lot of em say zone 5. Are they actually zone 5? Im zone 4 but with sheltered area plantings and careful winter prep i can get away with zone 5 roses. im especially interested in more the big cabbage type blooms and double points if they have a longer vase life ( say DA weddinv rose style)

which brings me to my next question. has anyone grown DA wedding roses? ive seen a few bushes for sale already here and there and pretty sure Juliets patent expires in Feb. so maybe we will see those come around more. if so how do they perform in a garden?

Anita Brubaker it's slow going sifting through Etsy digging for the DA wedding roses. I was wondering about Juliet too after watching BenT's Garden Glimpses videos last night.

I haven't had any regular David Austin roses die planted in my zone 5 tundra but it sure stunts their growth. The ground on the North side of the house doesn't thaw until late Spring. I'll be moving tender roses to an East bed mounding the dirt up deep .

It's hard to beat Evelyn , if I never get Juliet it made me pretty happy to have found Evelyn this year at High Country Roses.

@Anita Brubaker @Kittysrosegarden should be able to weigh in on this, although she's zone 6. I grow a lot of DA wedding roses (Juliet, Constance, Miranda, Edith, Bessie, Keira, Beatrice, Tess, Darcey, Patience, Leonora) and they grow well, for the most part, but I'm in 10a. Tess is a bit prone to powdery mildew, but everything in my garden gets it (except Francis Meilland, that beast).

Ladies, I’ve watched a few reviews of David Austin wedding roses grown in Zone 4b, shared by a professional rose grower. Her verdict is that these roses are not suitable for cold climates. Let me know if you’d like me to share the videos.

do the japanese roses fare the same in colder zones then to? what im looking for is roses i can use as cuts that will last long in the vase. ive seen some of the Japanese ones that say 10 days and that is really appealing.

@elenazone6 Yes please I’d love to see them too! Therein lies the rub when it comes to florist-specific varieties. Tolerance to adverse conditions such as weather variance and disease pressure is not selected for. Some of those attributes might hitch a ride during breeding programs, but it is not really being considered. We just have to experiment for ourselves.

This is one of the best rose channels in my opinion. The owner has her own nursery, and before selling new roses, she always trials them, zone 4a.

I have many wedding/florist roses. I have Constance, & Juliet, Julietta & Julietta Cerise are coming. Darcy Bussell, a DA, is sometimes a wedding rose-he is vigorous growing-blooms all the time. I have many Jaoanese and some from the Netherlands. Constance does well-growing & blooming ll the time & vigorously. Juliet, own-root, was a baby-sm canes, , she is fragile-I hope she is ok after this winter.

It depends how strong these roses are to begin with if they will make it through zone 5 winters. I will see how my florist & Jaoanese roses are after this winter where it dipped down to zero a couple times. i wrapped the small ones in burlap & mounded trunks with soil.

I have about 26 florist/Japanese roses ordered and I have I have 17 in my garden outside now. That makes 43. I think they are all diffetebt. Some Japanese/fkorist/European do very well and , some are weak & get fungus-mildew-BS. Its individual.

I’d see what these 3 vendors have at different times in the year & order from them wedding/florist/Jaoanese roses if you want 2 year old thick canes, tall canes, to start the season. They will grow the best and will be most hardy to make it through winter:

Another tip-since you are zone 4 I would plant them all florist & zone 5 roses on the south side of home nearest the warmest part of it-may be in the center to block wind & cold of winter. The east is morning sun, not as warm in winter. The west is cold in wibter, too. The north side is the coldest-I do not grow roses on the north side of home.

I buy baby roses that are a few months to a year old own-root baby roses from other Etsy sellers. I like these sellers, but they send out baby small own-roots which take pampering to grow big to make it through NY winters. They may be ok for my zone 6 weather, but I would not recommend them for zone 4 & 5 outside winters until they are 2 years old plants starting the season.

Another idea:

I have choosen to order roses bred in the Netherlands, from Dummen Orange, Jan Spek Rozen, VIP Roses, Interplant, to name a few. They seem to do well for me such as Georgia Peach, by Jan Spek. Georges Delbard roses do well too, such as my Nehema in my garden now. . Consequently I ordered a ton of Netherlands roses & a couple Delbards. Just a few highlights: I ordered Victorian Secret, Victorian Wedding, Victorian Bride, Edouard Manet.

A few Jaoanese strong vigorous roses now growing in my garden which are top performers-bloom a ton, very winter hardy: Miyabi & Pas de Deux. Both are exquisite-gorgeous!!! Highly recommend!

This season I will see which are the new top performers as I plant all my new ordered roses.

Thanks for all the info! last fall i had gotten Masora , Caramel Antike, and Chiffon from Springland Flowers. Absolutely beautiful plants came that ive been keeping alive under lights in my basement. i keep going back and looking at her sight and dreaming!

ill have to look up the suggested ones. Ive put Miyabi in my cart serveral times but i have a lot of pinks in my garden already so should get some different colors before i get more pink hues!

Any photos of your roses growing under grow lights? Are you ok taking care if ”indoor mites/aphids,” an issue w/ indoor roses? I wash my indoor roses weekly to get rid of pests. I felt growing them indoors over winter gave them a jump start to strengthen them for spring, since they come as babies sometimes. Also, be careful to order during freezing winters and have it travel across nation to your home in freezing winter-it can freeze damage roses!

I tried a new seller OliviaRoseMart on Etsy and had a great experience! A few weeks ago, I ordered Flamingo to test out their roses, and it arrived as a massive 3-gallon plant—way beyond my expectations. Impressed, I went back and ordered Colin Craven, Chinese Charity, Fen Yan, and Romantic Antike.

Today, I received the four new roses, but there was a mix-up—Romantic Antike was accidentally swapped with Miyabi Cha. I reached out, and without hesitation, they told me to keep Miyabi Cha and that they'd be shipping Romantic Antike out tomorrow.

The size and quality of these roses alone make them worth ordering, but the customer service is just as impressive.

Any blooms on em to verify its correct? If not keep us updated.

The size sounds awesome and Im not implying they arent honest i just like to check all the boxes before ordering to many.

thinking to sell U.S. customers the florist and some Japanese roses, legitimately. Grace is selling the Wabara & Japanese Princess lines possibly from Alexandra Farms, in Columbia, in the fall. I think the asian sellers realized that US gardeners would like them, first and the reason many U’S. sellers don’t have them is because they are just now realizing these florist roses can be very popular & in high demand in the US. . They are just now becoming popular. I think the asians just had a jump on the market & US sellers are now joining in as these roses are becoming popular- fabulous-superior quality!

Another consideration:

Many gardeners have thought that these ”florist roses & Japanese roses are grown in green houses & may be too delicate for our gardens. In actuality, I have about 26-30 florist & Japanese unique roses from asian sellers, other sellers, A&A and GRF and most of them are my ”more hardy roses!” They have darker green thicker leaves, stronger straight stems, bloom a ton, often very fragrant & have thicker stronger petals that bloom way longer outside & hold vase life 1-2 weeks! Wow! They hold blooms better in heat and rain! I much prefer these asian & florist roses to our garden roses we all buy. I have had hundreds and hundreds if regular garden roses and their rose blooms, stems & leaves are ”lighter weight, wilt quickly and fall in hot sun, stems and petals are so much more floppy! What a huge difference.

I only want florist & asian roses mainly now-what a huge improvement! Also, they have amazing colors, and fragrance often!

Another Note:

Now many asian sellers decided to grow them in nurseries in the US. I have seen the shipping addresses from Etsy roses & asian sellers from Georgia, South Carolina, Texas, and CA- shipped to me. I know where they grew them & shipped to me. They may not have an address on Etsy or a website, but you can track their shipment. i now have a few Etsy sellers I like and I know where they grow these roses.

These are just a few observations about the Japanese & florist roses. And some of them such as Miyabi are blooming machines! Fabulous Enjoy! 2nd & 3rd year own-roots are a dream! I posted my 3rd year-Miyabi photos on Spring thread

Very useful info thank you. I have been following some growers on IG (pineroses has super beautufil photos in particular) and trying to figure out whats going on with some of these sellers. I dont really want to violate copyright law, but youre right many of the Netherlands roses are being sold by Grace Roses. (Has anyone seen their prices lately?! have gotten some great plants from them but prices recently jumped up to over $200 from $50 to $60 to $80.)

Have been considering Robe a la francaise, Cinnabar, Summer Fireworks. Cinnabar looks like Summer Song to me too and I love that rusty color. The one I really want is Moons of Jupiter, which I saw on IG and in a store over thr winter but now cannot find.

GRF prices are quit high now… not sure if I’ll be buying from her now. GRF is selling now 3+ year old potted roses-her new summer offering. I like the Netherlands roses, though, she has a different inventory of regular garden roses started for summer. I am not sure any are from the Netherlands. (She had bare roots in spring from the Netherlands-but they are all sold.)

. You have a nice list of roses to order; however, I would be careful of Robe a la Francaise-she’s not like her photos that I noticed. I had her for 2 years. RaLF Is a gangly climber, gets powdery mildew a lot, and small orange (never pink) mini blooms-I did not notice their shape being a cupped shape-just an ok shape. I always wondered if they sent me a wrong rose-I tossed her. The rest of your choice roses I am sure will be wonderful. All the rest of the florist roses I have ordered were true to photos and gorgeous! Best Wishes! .

If I buy a rose it may be from the sellers Blushbloomery, JessicarosesUSA, Oliviarosemart, Highgarden Roes, Soringland Flowers, , & Hillside Farms, my best picks usually. They have Netherland roses, Japanese and other florist roses. I have often received 18 month-2 year old roses from them.

I don't know if she still does it, but Linda from Long Ago Roses I think moved entirely to Etsy/Ebay a few years back.

Regarding GCM Ranch, please read the current documentation ofthe lawsuit filed by David Austin UK, which includes the following statement:

"In April 2024, David Austin filed a complaint in Texas against three parties for the unauthorized production and sale of protected rose varieties, predominantly from the David Austin Wedding Rose Collection. These varieties were bred specifically for floristry purposes and are not intended or trialed for garden use. Their unauthorized propagation undermines both the integrity of the collection and the significant investment involved in developing them."

Paul, thanks for that information. I don't trust any Etsy rose sellers. Some of the sellers' names even set me on edge--like Olivia Rose Mart, and Jessica Roses. Yeah, Olivia Rose and Pretty Jessica. That's what pops into my head when I see those sellers' names. Then, I think, hmmm. lots of Chinese imitations on board for sale. Diane
