The usual definition of "sweet peppers" isn't about sugar content, but about the pungency/spiciness/heat, as in capsaicinoid levels. Those levels are well taste-established by the Scoville organoleptic scale, as Scoville heat units (SHU). Most people are looking for high SHU, but if you look around, you can find listings that include low values as well. See, for example, https://scovillescale.org/chili-pepper-scoville-scale/. There are many peppers with zero SHU. I would note that my favorite sweet pepper, Habanada, is not in that list. They too have zero SHU. Then again, there is the more abbreviated list https://peppergeek.com/the-scoville-scale/ that does have them.

I should add that you CAN talk about sugar content in peppers. Ripe peppers have somewhat more sugar. Also, there are some varietal differences. But high sugar doesn't mean low SHU! See for example https://pepperscale.com/sugar-in-peppers/.

Dan thanks! I am only interested in sweetest so I would like just sugar content, but that does not mean I will get it:) I do wait until they are ripe and with all peppers I have grown it really makes a difference.

A owner of a feed mill 5 miles from me is obsessed with peppers and sources pepper seeds from around the world. He has a green house start them which he sells at his retail stand. He also has a pepper club and a pepper tasting event every fall and publishes the top three winners for each category. ( same for tomatoes)

His seed bank consists of over 370 varieties and he has grown and tried them all. No all peppers seeds he saves are started and sold each year and I'd say 10%, and quantities are very limited for each variety. He does grow extra of the past years winners in all categories so I believe I'll stop by this spring and get a Habanada and see for myself.

I personally like Corno Di Toro, an sweet Italian frying pepper but it has to be ripe and completely red for the best flavor and sweetness.

It is frequently said that Habaneros are extraordinarily well-flavored peppers. Fruity, floral, etc. etc. Of course, you might need a fire extinguisher to put out the fire in your mouth in order to taste that. Habanadas were first bred at Cornell ag a decade ago. They are Habaneros without the capsaicins. ZERO heat (nada!), but with the all flavor left behind. I've been growing them for several years. Very productive. In my climate, I get two flushes of peppers each year, one maturing in July and the other in October. Altogether, I get several hundred peppers per plant. They are also open pollinated, so you buy seeds once, and never thereafter. That being said, I don't think they have an extraordinarily high sugar content.

I'm going to try them, you say not heat? I do like good tasting sweet peppers with mild heat. One of winners of the feed mills tasting events was a variety called Beaver Dam, small round peppers with a great sweet flavor followed by a warming heat about the same as a Poblano pepper, maybe 2000 SHU.

I think Habanadas Scoville out at zero. Less heat than a bell pepper.

There are many different types, try different shapes and see what you like. Personally, I do not find the most common types in the nurseries are anything special. Pimento types are considered to have the most sugar content generally.

Corno di Toro types are great, long pointed peppers that ripen sweet. Plants can get tall. 'Carmen' is an improved variety that you can find.

Did some research and the Burpee one is it. Interesting history. Reminded me of the year I got jalapeno seeds that were supposed to be spicy but not even a hint of spice! Someone here pointed out that it was cheap bix box company that also sold heatless jap's, clearly there was a mixup because every plant I had had zero heat biting into a full mature red jap with seeds! Frustrating year. First world problems:)

They are so productive that I can't use them fast enough, and at the end of the season I have to load up a food dryer with them. BTW, these peppers sort of bush out. Not really appropriate for a cage.

Side note about Burpee: I've had good luck buying Burpee seeds off the rack, but not ordering directly from Burpee -- poor quality, most notably with broken seeds. If it were me, I'd try to find the seeds from a company other than Burpee.

FYI, Row7 seed company was one of the original vendors for Habanadas. The company was launched by Michael Mazourek, the Cornell ag faculty member who originally bred Habanadas. Not sure how it works, but Row7 says that their profits support Cornell plant breeding. So if you want to order from another source, I wouldn't hesitate going to them. I think my original order, years ago, was with them.

Don - I see you ordered the Carmen. I think you will like them! But make sure they are full flamin' red for optimal sweetness. They're still good even with a little green in them, but really terrific when fully ripe, especially roasted.

Robert mentioned Lipstick and I agree that it is an amazing pepper. It's not a bell but it is quite prolific with decent sized, very sweet fruit. And it has a short DTM of 70 days or less (Southern Exposure lists it at 55 days).
