IMO shelving built like this should be designed to hold pieces that really should be displayed so what do you have crying out for display / Make the shelves fit those things

@Patricia Colwell Consulting That's a good idea, I hadn't thought about adding display lighting and I think that would be necessary to really use this for displaying things I think deserve to be highlighted. This piece seems too small where I have it next to the fireplace. Maybe I can have one big opening in the center of the shadow box with a light to make one item the sole focus and then have lesser stuff on the other shelves but those would be unlit. I'd hate to have this piece share the spot light with other items.

Maybe leave it big to accomodate other single items that I could rotate in the space?

I could do this as well... bump the star spot out a couple inches. My cabinet guy is going to kill me.

Waht you show with that piece you love is exactly what I mean . I only ever display things that call for display and let each one shine

If you bump out the one shelf, someone will put a Star Wars action figure there, or a chcolate Easter egg. Could be fun, could be trouble.

@bpath I worked at Nickelodeon for 10 years... I've got some SpongeBob and Dora the Explorer gear to display! Haha!

The rug and seating define the space , so unless you must display true treasure? Do you neeeeed it? Definite no on the bump : )

The horse wants more head room. Can he jump down to lighted shelf? I’ve been thinking about the shelf unit then you added bump outs so I had to think some more. I love the idea & look of the shelving - it’s a very nice add. I’m not much in favor of any of the shelves being bumped out. I agreed with @bpath note on things getting set on the bump out but I thought about people bumping into the bump out - literally. I almost prefer the 5 shelf look you started with but the 4 shelf would work too if either the 2nd shelf from top is a shorter opening or it has a taller treasure displayed in it. I don’t think the 4 openings need to be equal & kind of like that they aren’t - but no bump outs. Sorry, lots of opinions! 😊

At first glance it seemed like overkill. Now I think it is a really sensible way to give just a hint of privacy and separation. No to the bump outs. Yes, always, to horses.

Of course you worked at Nickelodeon. It explains a lot about how expansively you think. Can't wait to see what you come up with next - a green slime bucket of some ceiling space in your house?
