Kitchen countertops

last year

Can anyone share some ideas on what granite countertops look good with cherry cabinets, the hardware is polished nickel. I would like something very neutral and versatile, thanks so much!

There have been lots of threads on here about countertops and cherry cabs - here is one with pics: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6325031/natural-cherry-and-honed-black-granite

Darbuka, who posts here often, has soapstone counters with her cherry cabinets. They look terrific.

Thanks for the compliment, @Barrheadlass. However, my cabinets are a medium stained birch, not cherry.

Soapstone would look great with cherry cabs, too!

    Sorry, @Darbuka! i knew that!

Lol, no worries, @Barrheadlass! Again, thanks for the good words. 😊

Taj Mahal quartzite is harder and more durable than granite.

Can you show us an image of the cabinets please? The stain makes a difference.

The cabinets look a little more red tone in this picture, we had new doors and drawers made and will be using polished nickel hardware. The island he made will be painted Sherwin Williams Natural Tan possibly lightned by 25 to 50%, and yes the black appliances

much to by dismay will be staying! I am leaning to using a light color countertop!

Oh wait - do you also have a backsplash thread that says you are keeping your venetian gold counters? It’s fine if you are still trying to decide.

My internet is extremely slow since the storm, sorry for the typos

Understood. I’m in the same boat.

I have about decided to bite the bullet and change the countertops! The tile samples are just not working with this granite!

  • last year

Excuse the microwave also! Took ours down over the cooktop in order to replace backsplash!

  • last year

I wouldn't do a granite at all. Have you looked into quartz?

  • last year

No I haven’t however I’m open to any suggestions! This kitchen is about to get to me…lol

I was just helping another homeowner pick out their stone and they had seen so many options they ultimatley decided on a quartz from: https://www.veronaquartz.com/quartz-surfaces

Hope this helps! I know how tiring it can be to find the right stone.

My top three picks to match with your kitchen:

    1. Calacatta Bellezza Gold
    2. Calacatta Avenzia Gold
    3. Calacatta Bianco

Thanks so much, I really love the 1st one! It’s beautful and neutral!

Well, read more about quartz before you buy it. The white ones yellow as they age and this is not considered a warrantied defect. It can also scorch when used as a backsplash behind a range. Half the threads on quartz on this site are about owner dissatisfaction with the material and yet it is the most popular choice in counter materials right now. I don’t understand it. It’s beautiful today, but for some owners it’s not that pretty tomorrow.

Granite is a fine idea, but there really are no granites that look like marble. If you want a lighter counter consider Kashmir White. While it is sold as a granite, it is technically a metamorphic rock, and it has garnet in it. It looks great with cherry and will be as tough as granite would be.

Soapstone is beautiful with cherry, so is jet mist and other black granites, and slate, but they are dark grey to black, the opposite of what you are looking at right now.

Now it’s your turn. Find images of kitchens with cherry cabinets your color that you like.

Kashmir White original unused sample contrasts with older installation. This stuff shouldn't be used as a kitchen countertop. It is a stain sponge; not nearly "as tough as granite would be."

There are 100s of real stone I love green soapstone with cherry but we need to see your kitchen there is no way to answer this with no context. Post pics here in comments DO NOT start another post . White granites are allover the map with different flecks of color you need to go look at slabs. It is not just the cabinets thta drive counter choice we need to see the floors the appliances and your lighting

Thanks for everyone’s help, I have decided I am going this week and look at some slabs of the Kashmir White granite! I know I will not be satisfied until these gold countertops are out of here!

Here’s a Houzz thread with several pics of Pitaya to give you an idea of what it looks like installed.

Am thinking that white countertops with cherry cabinets would be too much of a stark contrast. Am thinking darker countertops would work better - not black but perhaps soapstone as someone else mentioned.

  • last year

Have to agree with Norwood Architects. White will be too stark against cherry cabs. Add the black appliances to the mix, and white is just wrong for this space.

This is a very traditional looking kitchen. I don’t see manmade quartz, poorly imitating marble in this kitchen. Every single quartz trying to mimic marble, looks so fake…lacking the depth and crystallized beauty of earth’s creation.

Can’t tell what your lighting situation is, as you do not show the ceilings, but I suspect it’s insufficient. For one thing, it doesn’t appear you have under cabinet lights. If you did, you wouldn’t need the small table lamp shown in the corner, next to the microwave. Even white counters benefit from under cabinet lighting.

You can see the effects of under cab lighting, in the two pics i posted further up in the thread. Here are two more pics showing the ceilings, and all three layers of light in our medium stained kitchen, with soapstone counters. Note the location of the modern recessed lights, which are hardly noticeable in the ceiling. Those lights illuminate the cabinets and the counters, where they’re of most use. The semi-flush lights take care of illuminating the floors.

And, closeups of the undercab lighting:

Thanks, I do have lightening under my cabinets however I choose not to use them. I also have 9 recessed lights in the ceiling.

@Joseph Corlett, LLC Asking because i truly want to know, not because i am pretending to know more than you - When Kashmir White is sealed it doesn’t stain does it?

I had white counter tops with cherry cabinets for many years, and they looked just fine.

That being said, I wouldn't use Kashmir white granite due to its being speckled just like the gold ones you have now. If you are going for a change, you are not going to see much with the Kashmir white.

My preference would be for soapstone or Jet Mist granite. If you don't want a dark counter top, then go with a simple white quartz, one with no large fake veins. Silestone Lagoon or Caesarstone London Gray are nice quartz options.

I suppose sealing every 6 months may help, but it's a very porous stone. Maybe if you don't use your tops a lot.

  • last year

Joseph Corlett, LLC Can you answer the same question for Aspen White granite? Does it stain if sealed - is it very porous? And is it prone to having the iron in it that turns it orange or is it only certain slabs so you can pick slabs without it? Thank you for any info you can share
