A cut in box would work with some patching around it.

Why is it so bothersome the way it is? moving it one inch seems like a lot of work with little gain.

Why wasnt a 3 gang box used instead? is there not enough wall room?

Three gang turned sideways or an old work aka remodel box. Either way you will have some patching.

There was not enough room for a 3 gang in between the two wall studs.

Not having the switch centered bothers me from a design standpoint. I'm remodeling my kitchen, and I want it to look good, not just this is how we slapped it up before racing off to the next house--particularly since I am paying on a time and materials basis.

There is a plastic electrical box there now. I guess I don't understand how that is different from an "old work box"? Does an old work box have a greater dimension on one side that would move it over?

There is not a stud across the top or bottom. Currently, the top box is screwed into the stud to the right side and the bottom box is screwed into both the stud on the left side and the stud on the right side.

This is a cut-in box. Is this what you meant?

My GC mentioned that he did not want to attach something to drywall because it can flop around over time. I apparently have one of those in my den, and it has moved around over time. The one in my den is a plug receptacle, which I imagine has received a lot more torque on it when people unplug a device. The switch wouldn't be subject to the same forces necessarily.

There are adapters to convert a 2 gang to a single, or you could install a 2 gang box and use 2 switches, one being non functional.

Possibly a double switch in the two gang box and eliminate the single gang box.

I would use a plastic cut in, not metal if your house is wired with romex.

Best way to center that box is to cut the box nails with a hacksaw blade. Remove the drywall to center the box and install a wood shim to the stud and re-screw the box to it with drywall screws once the box is centered. Then repair the drywall
