What's clean about cans?

Depending your kitchen, you can use both. We can't see your kitchen,

it is not uncommon to use pendants, recessed and under the cabinet lights, all in the same kitchen.

What is your layout, what is your ceiling height.....what size is the "peninsula" etc.

Post a pic of the whole kitchen and often a mix of lighting is the best choice for kitchens . Post the pics here in a comment DO NOT start another post.

As the other commenters said, we need to see pictures of your kitchen. But I think it's unlikely that having only pendants over your island is going to be enough light (or the right light) in your kitchen. All work surfaces need to be lighted. Are you building or remodeling?

It is a personal choice and depends on the design of the kitchen and what else is going on in the space. In some kitchens, pendants can be a nice accent and in other kitchens they just create visual clutter,

I chose not to do any in my kitchen, because I wanted the eye to move though the kitchen to the large triple windows surrounded by the marble mosaic backsplash I used.

Recessed can be placed around the counters and island as task lighting. That can be one layer to address function. Other layers can be ambient lighting and accent lighting. Ambient with floodlight bulbs in cans over open areas and accent lighting can include decorative elements if they fit the kitchen design.

Most people put in both pendant lights and recessed ones, plus under cabinet lighting for the perimeter cabinets. I like a layered look for lighting. If you want something minimal, go for a linear pendant over the island or multiples hung as one linear grouping:
