Christmas Ribbons quilt

last year

I saw a photo of a quilt made with this pattern online somewhere and looked up the free pattern. I had some old Christmas fabric that I've had since I first started quilting, so I thought this was a good chance to use some of it. The only purchase I had to make was the backing. I'm surprised at how much I like the quilt even though the fabrics were not purchased to be used together. I guess maybe most holiday fabric looks good together. It's about 55"x66", and the quilting panto is called Van Gogh. I just finished it last night, and appropriately it snowed about 3" yesterday. Minnesota weather is so bizarre. It was 78 degrees on Tuesday. Happily, we'll be back in the 50-60 degree range next week.

Love it!!! I have some of those same fabrics ... I may have to do a "copycat" quilt!

You should, Sue. It was fast and fun. Here is the pattern. https://cloud9fabrics.com/make-sew-ribbon-box-quilt/

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

And now that I have looked at the pattern, I am very sure that I have that in my ’maybe’ file. Who knew!

Now that Sterling’s quilt is going to the quilter tomorrow, I will have to give it a go.

I can’t wait to see what you make with your bin of Christmas fabric.

So I got off my butt, went downstairs and opened the Christmas bin.

But first, I tried to print the pattern and wasn’t having much success. It printed out so small, I couldn’t read it. I think I solved that problem, number 1.

The pattern calls for a third yard of each fabric, that is twelve inches by my count. Is that right Lois? Not sure if I have solved that problem, number 2.

I pulled out twelve fabrics, laid them out, rearranged them a bit and then started cutting. I managed to get three ’ribbons’ cut. Looking good.!

OOPS! my cutter slipped and I now have two sliced fingers. Dang, those things are sharp!! Problem number 3!

And coming upstairs to get bandaids, I tripped and fell. #4.

Fast and fun, Lois?? Fast maybe, fun, not so sure.

Do you all keep bandaids in your sewing room? Since this has happened before, I think I had better keep a Costco sized box there.

I will give my fingers a little time to stop bleeding, but back at it tomorrow, unless I do something else stupid!

Oh, Theresa! Definitely time to take a break. I hope your fingers aren’t too sore and you weren’t hurt when you fell.

    Yikes, Theresa!!!

Be careful. those rotary cutters can be so dangerous, but I can't imagine going back to cutting with scissors.

Looks like you will need to go out for dinner - or get take out.

Oh, Theresa, what a string of injuries! I’m so sorry. I’ve never cut my finger on a rotary cutter, but I’m pretty faithful to use my Klutz glove. Maybe you should get one. Yes, a third of a yard is 12”. I don’t remember if you really need that much, because I used scraps for some of the ribbons. I hope you heal quickly and get back to it

I seem to be moving in slo-mo. I did get one day of working on the quilt. Fingers healed nicely so no problem there. But I wasn’t paying close attention and I made a couple of mistakes. I have lots of fabric so can cut more as needed.

I took some time away from sewing and spent one day making fruit cakes, and today I made our traditional French meat pie, not just one but eleven!!

And in between all that activity, I went to bed for a day with a raging headache.

Tomorrow, I pick up Sterling’s quilt from the quilter. Anxious to see what she did. And then comes the binding and label.

I hope I can get back to these ribbons soon. Barring any more baking or headaches.

Theresa, I'm glad to hear that your fingers healed well. You've done a lot of baking and cooking. What is a French meat pie? I hadn't baked Christmas cookies since Covid hit and we started spending winters in Palm Desert. I was feeling a little guilty though, so I made some this year. Instead of 10 different types, I made 8, and I made half recipes. I ended up with about 450 cookies instead of 1100. I'm not mailing them all over the country as I used to either. These will be for my family and a couple close friends at Thanksgiving, and I'll take the rest south with me.

I can't wait to see Stewart's quilt. Your fabric was so cute. Bind it quickly and post a photo.

Time to get back to this quilt. I made two pillowcases to go with Sterling’s quilt, so as soon as I do a label, it will be Christmas Ribbons all the way.

You've got time. Go, Theresa, go. Just be careful. Even though red is a Christmas color, we don't want blood on the quilt.

I have finished all of the sewing of partial squares. Now it is layout time.

If anyone is thinking of doing this pattern, I would suggest labelling all the different sized cuts, especially the white. Not doing that is what caused me to put it in timeout for a bit.

Why is it that when you want to work on something, there are all kinds of interruptions.

I do have all the individual rows sewn and pressed. Now it is on to the last step, sewing rows together, hopefully today!

My third attempt at posting this! Three times lucky?

Here is the ribbons quilt, top only. I finished it up yesterday. I don’t have a suitable backing fabric for it. So it will sit in the time out basket.

Lois why does mine look bigger than yours? Optical illusion?

It was fairly easy to put together as long as every fabric was labelled.

I am wondering how difficult it would be to redesign it to be smaller???

When I see it laid out like this, I think table cloth. If I were to follow that route, how could I finish it without just hemming all around

    Ok Lois, what is next?

Yours looks great, Theresa. Mine is 54x61 quilted, probably a little smaller than it was unquilted. If you wanted to use it as a tablecloth, I guess I would use a lightweight backing and no batting. I’d quilt it as normal. I’d probably also birth it rather than bind it.

Nice work, Theresa! I was going to suggest birthing it with just a backing, too.
