Keep old 1980’s faux stone?

We got a new fire place box put in which has Durock now around what they had to cut out. Least expensive way: keep the same stone and figure out something to put on the Durock? Paint Old faux stone and still figure something on Durock? Most expensive: totally change it. It’s a big focal point and large area. Thanks for any ideas.

I would keep the stone just like it is and put plain tile matched to a color in the stone where the durock is.

Are the two built in cabinets staying. Definitely DONT paint the stone, always looks terrible. If those cabinets are staying that whole area needs to be redesigned. Otherwise peel off the stone and re do it with new stone on the whole wall including over the cabinet recesses.
