Open formal dining/sitting room: 1 rug or 2?

Hello, I recently moved and am trying to decide on the right rug situation for this room. The currently empty side will shortly have a baby grand piano and small seating group. The dining table and credenza will stay where they are (although I will be switching the credenza out for a wood tone at some point but likely similar dimensions). The blue walls will be painted the griege that you can see on the central pillar (it’s Dunn Edward’s Porous Stone) and I think I’ll paint the French doors dark grey/black.

All of that aside, I’m stuck on deciding on number of rugs.

Do I get:
A) 2 of the same spaced evenly
B) 1 giant one to fill the whole room, or do I only need C) 1 under the table
D) 1 on the piano side
E) 1 under the table and a smaller one for the seating group
F) No rugs
G) Some other configuration

1 rug under dining table only

2 rugs evenly spaced

something else?

Also, we don’t use all 3 sets of doors. At best we would only use the center doors. Generally to use doors from a different room to go outside.

I would define each area with a large rug, the hallway might need a couple, and the conversation area. I don't think you need one under the dining table, unless you find something fabulous.

I agree with Lyn. I'd put a rug in the piano area but maybe not in the dining area. But if you do get two, definitely don't do two matching, unless maybe they're something like seagrass or custom cut broadloom. Just not two matching rugs that are supposed to look antique because then it's obvious that they're not real antiques, and it could look cheap.

For what it's worth, I like the blue wall color you currently have. Congrats on your new house!

I couldn't find exactly your situation, but here are dining/living together.

Hard to see in this picture, but one rug is a solid and the one further back has a light pattern.

I was thinking along the lines of a very plain rug like the picture you posted with the piano. Or like this one from Amazon. So just one for the piano area? Or would something as plain as this be one on each side do you think. All the pictures look fabulous! I am considering making the room dark olive green….but maybe I’m too frightened so might opt for a green settee to start with. The blue is nice but there is a lot of blue in the rest of the house so I am itching to remove it.

Yes I think two like what you're thinking would be OK. I love green so I say go for it! Actually, since your paint is already dark, it might be less work to do the green, vs several layers to go light only to wish you had gone green. :) I have a dark green dining room so I'm biased though.

You might consider a patterned rug for the living room portion, and a complementary natural fiber rug for under the dining table. 2 items that play nicely together.

I would definitely do a patterned rug for the conversation area. a border print.

For the hallway, a neutral, but it's a large space, too many beige things makes for a bland space

@lyn that ruggable rug is lovely. Maybe I’ll keep the blue walls and do a green rug, with a green settee….and either no rug under the table or the very plain one.

Piano and rug in place!!! I think I’m going to try a sage green on the walls. Any ideas on what type of seating group I should add? I was thinking a beige loveseat and 2 chairs. But maybe just 2 arm chairs? Or 4 arranged like a gentleman’s club around a small table. Anyone have ideas?
