Although it's not my style, it's an interesting piece and could look good just as it is. Seems like the size works, and if you leave it that color it will stand out as a focal point. If you don't want it to stand out, you could paint it the same color as the trim in the room.

What I WOULD do is clear everything off the mantel--with that piece you don't need a bunch of little tchotchkes distracting you from the more important piece.

I do not think it works with the FP you have . It is great piece I could see it above the FP if the FP was traditional the mantel piece does not even work with the FP and for sure not the trim on the wall or all the stuff on the mantel now . I would love to see that pice behind a bar or redo the FP to work with it but not those together as it is now . PLease painting it will make it look cheap

You didn't post any of the surrounding area as a decor reference but here's one idea...

It looks like a pediment to a big door or window in a bank or mansion.

I think it would work hung high on the wall -where the trim is, as part of a collection of vintage curios on the mantel and on the wall around it and above it, like a clock, glazed pottery, carved wood cases, statuettes, picture frames, etc.

The mantel seems fine but I would replace the tile with real marble tile of some sort.
