is there any hope?

last year

After 30 years, we are replacing the floors in our home. We have Cherry cabinets that are still in really good shape, and can’t replace them, nor the granite at the moment. We do plan to replace the backsplash with something light and will be painting the kitchen a warm neutral color. Would love anyone’s advice on what to do with the floor. It will be engineered wood… But I’m finding that tricky against these dark cabinets.

change any lighting if you havent in a while. choose your lumens and kelvin rating. I might change that central dangling fixture for an Led set up of some sort...close to ceiling or flush mount. you might consider doing the painting [ walls] because you have a highly pigmented yellow right now. i would lean toward a lighter..maybe ash toned look.....you have to bring in samples.

the first here is one that would appeal to me w the current cabs. a few others shown..you dont have to get the typical orange tinged theme.....there are newer tones that will be very nice.

Thank you, herbflavor and earn44 for your kind input! I thought this would be an easy decision, but I’m finding that floor choices vary so widely and there are so many combinations, it makes my head spin! I have red oak stained med brown wood floors in my entry and like the tone there, but not sure it works with the very warm reds in the cherry and will consider lighter shades, as well. I am looking at cream subway tiles for the backsplash and will paint the dining area alabaster once we have the molding installed above. Hoping that will help to lighten things as well! The yellow walls will be painted a lighter warm neutral. Appreciate your help so much!

Well, when in doubt, go lighter. Your floors are white tile and you are about to make them darker by making them wood. Don’t also stain them. While the stain might be pretty, you are already going to feel like the space has gotten darker, because a major expanse will have gotten darker.

Congrats on cabinets going strong after 30 years.

Nothing is a substitute for having the flooring you will use in your space, next to your cabinets, using your actual light. Bring home loads of samples in the largest chunks thye allow - not just one tiny plank.

Try them out at different times of day and next to different cabinets as your cabinets look different depending on the light that hits them, for example your end cabinet appears much darker than others.

I had cherry cabinets and stain matched floors to the exact color of the cabinets and loved them. But, that might not be your cup of tea. Experiment with samples.

I'd learn towards a bit more blonde over grey undertones.

Select your flooring first, then your paint. I'd paint the dining, living, and kitchen the same color as they are open spaces to each other.

Get everything else in place and then select your backsplash. You may decide on something else once your floors are in place.

It's difficult to tell precise colours from our laptops but here are some ideas. A medium brown flooring, warm white for the walls, a white/cream from your granite for the backsplash tiles, and brass pulls on your cabinets.

Thank you, lisedv, especially for the storyboard! It really helps to see it all in one place. Much appreciated! Swiss Coffee is one of the color choices I narrowed down, as is the backsplash you proposed!

I came here to answer what Eam said. Natural clearcoated oak works well with cherry. Here is a kitchen that I did for a client 25 years ago. Man, I'm showing my age!
