How do I design a no stooping to load a washer laundry room?

If you raise a stackable, won’t the top be too high ti reach? I’d also be afraid of them toppling over. I too have a stackable and my back is not loving the stoop.

    Get a top loading washer

We have a heavy duty drip tray that doubles as a riser and lifts the whole stack about 5". We have the Miele machines which are not as big as the LGs for example. I'm sorry I don't know the product name but we got it from our appliance dealer.

I need to understand the issues. I am on the board for units where people have wheelchairs and front loaders are the only way to go. You do realize that the higher you put the washer in a stacked pair the higher the dryer is . I need more info. and do you have to have a stacking pair. I have no idea how a top loader would be better sinc ethen you have to reach to the bottom which is not ideal .

Plan for a Speedqueen top loader.

Seems like the OP asked about designing a laundry room for a raised stack of washer and dryer, not raising each on a separate pedestal, but it is not clear to me what the OP actually has in mind.

@hgwixom Like Patricia says above, it would help to if you could be more specific about your space and your washer and dryer. Do you want to design for a stacked washer and dryer you already have or for ones you are considering? Are we talking about designing a new house or new condo or modifying an existing laundry space or closet? Is the "stack" (or will it be):

    * a separate washer with a separate dryer mounted with stacking kit?

    * a unitized appliance like Frigidaire's "laundry centers" with a top-loading washer on the bottom and an elevated dryer cabinet above it?

    * A unitized washtower (like from LG or Speed Queen) with a front load washer below and the control panel in the middle between the washer and dryer?

ETA: See BeverlyFLADeziner's post below for images of two washtower models and one "laundry center."

Top loaders are not good for the aging or those with back problems/mobility issues -- you have to bend over and reach way in to get the clothes out.

I'm 5'5", and when I looked at machines not too long ago, the Miele and Asko compact units when stacked with one riser would be a reachable height for me to reach in the dryer at the top; without the riser, the washer would be too low and I'd have to stoop. Larger machines are going to be higher, though, so you're going to have to go shopping to see what is comfortable for you. I'm not sure if I'm going to go the stacked route, but if I do it will be that set up or else the compact machines set side-by-side, each on its own riser, which will be the perfect height for me at this age or in my old age and perfect for a wheelchair should my life ever come to that.

    Stackables on the market.

Unfortunately, the manufacturers all say versions of the same thing that Miele says about stacking a washer and dryer on on one riser: "Not suitable for stacked installation."

That, of course, is for the risers (pedestals) the makers sell. I do recall seeing some some past threads here and some YouTube videos about DIY fabrication of very robust platforms and plinths. Those I recall all left unresolved questions of how to get the stack up and down from the platform when service is needed or how to move the units for access to the plumbing and venting connections. A heat pump dryer would at least avoid venting issues but still leaves the other problems unaddressed.

possibly you could build them into cabinetry so they are one atop the other but not actually "stacked" as in locked together with the attachment kit.

How do you access the water shut off valves during emergencies? Perhaps the solution is an all in one washer/dryer combo? Then the unit can be placed at a height that is comfortable. https://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-2-4-cu-ft-Compact-White-120-Volt-Ventless-Electric-All-in-One-Washer-Dryer-Combo-GFQ14ESSNWW/312481993

How would you reach the dryer if the whole stack is on a riser? My daughter’s apartment has the 2nd washer/dryer unit pictured by Beverly. It is apartment size. I am 5ft tall and have to stand on my tiptoes to see into the dryer. I can not imagine how high a regular washer dryer stacked unit would be with a riser.

I opted for side by sides in my new laundry Reno. At 5’4” I couldn’t reach the dryer controls.

I guess we wait for some answers from the OP

Well, that blows a hole in my plans, but I am really glad you posted this information, I was not aware. Truth be told, I'd prefer side-by-side compacts on pedestals, but it's a matter of fitting everything I want/need into a small space.

there are options that lift the stackables up about 6inches for ada compliance. lg sells this through their parts department for their stackable

That would be great for the OP, but I'm having trouble finding cites for that. Can you give us a cite or a link for that info about the ADA compliant lift for stackables? I'm asking because my searches are only turning up LG customer service answers from LG.com like the following:

" Will this fit under a model # WKEX200HBA Laundry Center?

    "1 answer · a month ago

"The ADA Compliant Laundry Pedestal Riser - Black Steel, Model # WDPS2B is incompatible with the ENERGY STAR® Certified LG WashTower™ 4.5 cu. Ft. Washer and 7.4 cu. Ft. Electric Dryer - Black Steel, Model # WKEX200HBA, or with any other LG WashTower™ units. They are all too heavy for the pedestal riser...^Ivan".

"Will this carry my WKGX201HWA LG WashTower? I purchased the base, but haven't installed because not sure if it will handle the weight. I'm in need to lift it higher because the lip of my drain pan is blocking the maintenance door on the bottom left.

Hi, Jay! None of our pedestals are compatible with WashTowers. ^Ian"

There's a difference between "stackables" and a washer/dryer pair manufactured as unitary "stacked."

All frontloader washer/dryer pairs with controls on the front are stackable ... meaning they can be installed side-by-side or stacked

Stacked pairs can be operated only in a stacked configuration, they cannot be unstacked and installed/operated side-by-side.

BeverlyFLADeziner's photos above are unitary stacked pairs, not stackables.

If you raise stacked machines, the dryer will likely be too high. If you raise front loading machines (not stacked), you can buy or build pedestals for them.

  • last month

Manufacturers presumably don't qualify pedestals for use under a stacked set due to the increased weight of a washer and dryer together atop a pedestal designed to support the weight of one machine.

The one on top looks like a stackable. The bottom two look like stacked pairs.

One caution about stacked pair topload -- the lid doesn't open as much as a regular top load so it can be a bit of a pain to see clothes in the tub and also you have to be a bit more patient when putting things in and taking them out. I had one of those in a corporate rental apartment a couple of decades ago.

"anoop: The one on top looks like a stackable. The bottom two look like stacked pairs."

The top set is a Speed Queen SF7007WE (or the SF7007WG gas version). The unitary control panel (for both washer and dryer) is in the middle (actually, part of the washer). Removing the dryer and setting it aside leaves it with no control panel.

    @dadoes I missed that.
