She’ll not come again come spring or come fall

IT’S that rascal Dr. Huey who’ll be coming to call.

Darn! Someone here recently mentioned that the bad doctor comes

adorned with 5 leaves, and sure ’nuff. 😫 I guess that’s all the proof

needed to , sob, dig it up? I am didappointed.

One thing to add to googling (or the collected knowledge on this forum): What rose was there before -- where did you get it -- and could it be a different rootstock than Dr. Huey? This page might be helpful: http://www.santaclaritarose.org/Rootstock2.html . If you were growing a J&P rose, or one from Edmunds, or elsewhere, you may have had a different rootstock going on. I've never seen a picture of the flower that the RW rootstock from Jackson & Perkins produces. Anyone else?

But if it's most probable that your prior roses in the area were all on Dr. Huey, and we know this rose is NOT Dr. Huey, then the answer is probably the seedling. I got a seedling between paving stones one year -- kept it for a while. It was reasonably pretty, not super fragrant, and didn't bloom a lot, so I eventually got rid of it. But it was fun (for 2 seasons!) to imagine I'd accidentally got the next most amazing rose! Enjoy the suspense.

No idea. Never grew a rose like that in that area. Im torn between leaving it to wait and see , vs. assume the five leaves are proof positive it is dh and sp it immediately. Do any ”good” roses have five leaves?

Wow! Big display of ignoramce on my part it seems! I simply googled to find that, yes, there ARE many roses with 5 leaf sets. Guess I’ll be waiting …with fingers crossed.

Martin, if you’re wondering if this pink rose you sent a picture of is Dr Huey or not, the answer is no. The photo above is NOT a photo of Dr Huey. The doctor has deep
crimson roses and only blooms in the spring. If this is a random rose that popped up in your flower beds, you’re likely looking at a seedling from one of your roses that produced a hip.

I know what Dr H is, but , well, too,long and boring, but thank you for replying!!. Hopiing you are right. someone else mentioned that possibility. Fingers crossed.

Perhaps I’m not understanding what your concern is, Marti . If I understand what you’re saying, this rose showed up in a spot you had never planted such a rose in, right? F you had planted a grafted rose there at some point in time and the graft died out and only the rootstock is left, then that’s what you’re seeing. But obviously that rootstock isn’t Dr. Huey. If it’s a seedling that appeared, it’s not going to be taken over by Dr Huey next year either, because it’s a seedling and there’s no rootstock under it to take over next year.

I agree! If this is NOT the rose you originally planted, it's probably a seedling or a sucker from it. In any case, it's NOT Dr. Huey. Pretty rose though. :)

Im silly to be sharing such a small nothing , but I am excited . Y’’all gave me hope, so your fault :) Today I found three tiny buds on this very small bush. I will be back(warning!) when they open!
