Help with decorating

Hi, I just got my first house and I have no idea how to decorate it. I have a few pieces of furniture but I feel like it’s all meshed as one. I want to go for a timeless look in my living room, any help is appreciated.

This looks like a decent start on a blank slate. To get more help IG you share a floor plan and pics of adjoining spaces people will be able to support more and offer advice. Right of the top of my head I would say the unit behind the sofa is better for the TV and the taller unit as a console elsewhere. I think the side table is facing the wrong way and you need to add a rug, throw pillows and some colour. This can be done with art, rug, pillows and plants

You have the TV on the wrong wall. Why would you want to chop up your room like you have?

You'll probably wish you had a sectional with the chaise at the other end.

I would put the sofa on the long wall, and the TV on the short wall where the floor lamp and coffee table/TV console are now. Why is your TV on a tall console table? IMO, TV's should be at eye level when you're sitting.

Once you get the furniture arranged to your satisfaction, you need to think about putting some art on the walls.

Your gray sofa was IN for around 12 years and has been OUT for around 3 years.

Nothing is timeless! Decorate in a style that makes you happy and complements the style of the house ... and then you won't care what the trends are doing.

This is the layout that I have if it’s helpful with coming up with ideas

Now that I see the whole layout, Beverly’s plans are great. They make sense for the space. You would also likely need a dining table? I think this space can be really nice and as another grey sectional owner, I believe it’s a great starting item to build a foundation off of.

I used the family room as the living room. The photo I’m attaching is the front room of the house and I how I styled it.

I like the dining area. The front area needs a bit more to he cozy. What about adding some seating?

You need a rug and art. Art that is large, high-quality pictures of people or places you love nicely framed is relatively cheap and looks great.

I thought about adding a chair along the wall with the other chair and then a rug but I felt like that area would still look empty. Is having two rugs too much? One in the front room and in the living room area?

You can have two rugs in the same room! Rugs help to define a space and can absolutely have more than one in a layout like yours.

Here is an update. I will for sure add a bit more color, art, and a rug in this room.

And a coffee table and some plants. Great start.

Thank you! I’m appreciated all the feedback so much!

Congratulations on you first home! It’s very nice and I like the new arrangement as well. Rugs, tables and lamps will come.

    Thank you!

The new arrangement is much better! Pull the sofa off the wall a little bit and the chair closer in. The TV doesn't have to be centered on the cabinet if it would be better for viewing more to the left-just add something tall to the right of it on the cabinet.

The new arrangement looks nice. When your budget allows, I think several rugs would add a lot to your rooms. The sofa area now is very bland, the colors, tones are all very similar browns and grays. I wanted to try to infuse some color via a rug but since there is nothing i can see with any color in it, I had no idea what might work for you. These are pretty neutral with a few different subtle colors mixed in. You can put your pictures on several rug sites with "rug visualizers" and try rugs you like in your rooms.

These are all from rugs direct.

This is awesome, thank you so much. I like the visuals it lets me see what colors work will with the room.

These are all washable from Rugs USA - again, might not be your taste but just to show how much a rug can add.

Here's how to get out of your beige, gray rut. Decide on a large art work you like for over the couch (or a pair of art works). Choose an accent color from art for pillows and rugs. If you're a newbie to buying art, then start with a great rug in grays/browns/accent and get complementary art. Check out society6.com for very affordable art prints that come in many sizes. Better to have a few large pieces than bitty ones.

Below are some art pairings, keeping in mind your dark brown floor. Start with art (or rug) then look for complementary art/rug.

    Decorating tips:

Light against dark or dark against light gives a room liveliness so with your dark floor and dark furnishings, then lighter rug and art.

Rug and art should echo each other, but if one is bold, the other should be quieter. ,

Don't skimp on the rug since it will add color and pattern to the room. It should be large enough so the sofa sits well on it allows for a walkway as well.

I'd suggest you fine tune the placement of your furnishings in the family room. Your sofa is pushed up against the wall and it will look better with 4-6" of space behind it.

Sometime you have to purchase furnishings that are larger than what can fit in the trunk. Your entry table is undersize and the mirror is not nearly big enough. Also have you noticed that everything blends into your floor? The contrast of a black in the foyer could add some drama.

Something a big more contemporary would have been better.
