The exterior should be simple, because it is. The center staircase is from early last century. About post WWII the entrance was moved to the right side and the stairs with it.

There are some good books that have historic house plans. Henry and Ottalie Williams had a few. I've picked up books on historic house design in good used book stores before.

Draw it -- but be honest about whether you're able to do it well.

I grew up in a farmhouse similar to the one you drew (but one-story), which my grandmother drew on graph paper. It's about 100 years old now, and it's had several renovations and a one-bedroom apartment /breezeway connection added, but it's still a nice little farmhouse. Faces South, loads of natural light, extra-wide center hallway that doubles as a library, huge pantry in the center of the house. The only negative is that the bedroom closets are small, as was the expectation 100 years ago.
