Kitchen Help!! I need recommendations for cabinet pain & backsplash

last month
last modified: last month

I'm replacing everything in the kitchen. I like the idea of griege/warm cabinets and water backsplash (not basic subway tiles probably though). I plan on white quartz countertops. The rooms adjacent are agreeable gray. I'm having a hard time finding a good griege color and backsplash tiles that don't look too gray. On the other hand, white cabinets and a warm tile may be easier. Here's my kitchen, an edited pic with shoji white, and some inspo pics. Any recommendations are welcome!!

You are replacing everything. Don't put a buggy out in front of your horse,.

Far ahead of finishes, paint colors, and a backsplash is the very last thing to be considered is the last element to be installed in any kitchen. Other nearby rooms and their paint color on the walls? Rather irrelevant , as compared with a total kitchen reno, the cost of a paint job, is fairly insignificant.

The very first thing you consider is layout. appliances, storage, and more

Draw and measure the existing kitchen, Every solid wall, every window, every opening has its very own dimensions. You do a version of below, and come back in comments below, after you upload that drawing, neat, bold , legible......as a jpeg.

    Essentially like below

Are your floors remaining? They will drive what cabinet color and all other colors you select.

Also, it seems you have few windows and little natural light in your kitchen so your kitchen cabinet and tile colors will never look as luminous and beautiful as your AI image nor your inspo pics. BUT, you can improve it greatly. Do you have a new lighting plan/budget for the kitchen? Are you adding windows or is everything staying much the same?

Your kitchen looks enclosed, rather than open to the rooms around it. Do you intend for it to stay that way? Are you taking down any walls? Changing the paint color in adjoining rooms will be far less expensive over the years than changing cabinets.

Cabinets are expensive and need to last years and years. After

you finalize your layout and lighting plan, think of a cabinet color you love. Get sample doors and play with them in your room and see how they look with your floors.

Then consider your counters. White quartz can means so many different things - warm white, cool white, pure white, cream. Start with the cabinet color, then find a countertop, and lastly look for a backsplash.

What is your budget for this remodel? Will it include new appliances?

get graph paper and show the dimensions of your space . it looks fairly large , but we cant tell for sure until the measurements are presented. There may be a better layout. That should always be considered.

Isn’t this the same question you asked about in 2023? https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6405839/kitchen-reno-help-needed

@JAN MOYER thank you for your feedback. My contractor has the dimensions and we've decided the layout, etc. He wants to know what color for the cabinets by next week.

@Kendrah thank you. The floors are being replaced as well. I'll add a picture of the floors in the next room with some samples I picked up. No walls are coming down. Its a galley kitchen with one window. It does get natural light from the exterior doors in the adjacent rooms though. I am going to add a light fixture above the sink and will replace the recessed lighting as well. I am really stuck on the cabinet color which is what I really need help with. There are a million options. I have several tile samples as well and a lot of them are too cool undertoned up against the griege paint samples I have.

    @apple_pie_order yes all new appliances.

@herbflavor its 15.25ft x 10 ft. The layout is staying the same.

@Fran Gil it is! finding a contractor around my area has been a nightmare. But I have finally found one and the next step is picking out the cabinet colors. Finally!

Greige is a horrid color for cupboards. They will forever be dingy looking...If you insist on painted go with a white or cream.

A "contractor" is the designer? Really? Would you like to know how many of that type of result has been fixed, improved on this site?

Where are the "unfinished" unpainted as of yet cabinets coming from?

" The layout is staying same......."

How far is that fridge from your sink? ! in the pics you posted?

How many and what size drawer bases do you have?

Certainly, you can ignore me, ignore all others who have suggested measure, or at the very least post the PLAN? Up to you of course and it is your money....

if you want a change from white I would consider yellow. this appears a traditional styled kitchen ....you are leaving walls intact....hardwood floors etc....bring in paint card samples of a color. white can be a default option...but youve had that. .

The post from two years ago contained a comment from @Buehl requesting measurements:

Buehl provided some layout advice in the next three or four comments. I don't know if OP used that layout advice . . .

@JAN MOYER @dani_m08 I don't have a copy of the sketches from the contractor but here is some measurements for the window side of kitchen.

I don't think I did a good job of asking my main question in my inital post, so I apologize for that. I am looking for recommendations for cabinet paint colors and tile backsplashes that pair nicely and give a similar look as the inspo pictures.

  • last month

@JAN MOYER the cabinets are going to be made by an Amish cabinetmaker my contractor has worked with often

  • last month

@arcy_gw do you have any specific paint colors you could recommend? Thank you.

  • last month

@herbflavor those pictures are lovely. I'm just not a personal fan of yellow. I'm looking for something close to the colors in my inspo pics.

@Abby Smith - you just need to do a Google search of your inspiration photos with your camera -

I did one for your first inspiration photo -

Here is a different shot of the kitchen (from her design website) -

    https://www.blushingbohodesign.com/new-house-kitchen

FYI - she did the entire renovation with her husband (they built all of the cabinets also). She has some really pretty rooms in her home (they always do all the work).

Paint Colors: island is Sherwin Williams Utterly Beige (a little darker), perimeter cabinets are Sherwin Williams Realist Beige. She lists paint colors here also:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/DTOXK8Cka4W/?img_index=1

I knew the backsplash without looking it up - it's Bedrosian Cloe White tile/Ivy Hill Kingston White (there are other sellers who offer the same tile - it's actual size is 2.55 x 7.87 - the manufacturer is Equipe Ceramicas - their Artisan tile collection). Bedrosian specs it as a nominal size of 2.5 x 8 and Ivy Hill specs it at a nominal size of 3x8 (but they are the actual size listed above). It also is available in a 5x5 size (it's actual size is just a bit larger than 5").

If you decide you want the backsplash tile shown above, make sure that you do a search to find the best price - it's offered with free shipping from Lowe's/HD (and free restocking - just drop at store). Bedrosian sells it through Walmart (you can receive free shipping + return at a Walmart store - make sure that you confirm that hasn't changed). Ivy Hill offers matching Bullnose tile and Bedrosian offers matching pencil trim.

@dani_m08 thank you!!! I actually just picked up some realist beige to paint on some cardboard and play around with.

I quickly did a search to see if I could find your second inspiration photo source -

It was posted by a slab supplier in Georgia - no paint colors listed since it was showing off the slabs.

Your exact inspiration photo was included in the post on instagram.

The slab supplier is registered on Houzz - I don't know if they would provide the designer's info in order for you to find the exact paint color used on perimeter cabinets.

Here are a few ideas for similar paint colors:

    BM Collingwood:

A professional designer made an educated guess that the below kitchen is BM Revere Pewter:

SW Accessible Beige is a popular color for kitchen cabinets:

This is Accessible Beige also - I don't know if this kitchen has a ton of light - or if they edited the photo before posting:

    BM Creamy White:

    BM Ballet White:

What color will your appliances be? Stainless? Hopefully. If you are sticking with white appliances, that is one more thing to consider - how the paint color of your cabinets looks with your appliances.

If you don't have a lot of skill or experience in mixing colors, dealing with light, and the like, I'd be really temped to stick with a nice warm white cabinet color. Greige and beige opens lots of rabbit holes of too muddy, too dirty, too pinkish.

For my various kitchens I have gone either with linen white (Ben Moore) though it might be a bit more creamy than most people like. Or maritime white.

I have a galley kitchen. (I love them!) But they can sometimes have a bowling alley effect. In my kitchen I chose to put in two different countertops. My walls are linen white, which is an exact match to Corian vanilla. So one wall feels totally seamless with countertops and cabinet/paint. The other wall is linen white cabinets and paint with a walnut butcher board countertop. I really like how it turned out.

@dani_m08 yes, thank you!!! I love that backsplash!!! My only worry is that I'm going to pair it with a cabinet color that makes it look to gray and clash. But there are several pictures on the website that makes it seem perfect for what I want. I've also thought about extended the quartz countertops to the ceiling instead of a tile backsplash.

  • last month

@Kendrah the appliances will be stainless. I think a warm white would be great. Any suggests and/or backsplash recommendations to pair with?? Thank you for your help!

Not sure if you know of Maria Killam - she does color reccos and so does Kylie M - i pasted in some of their reccos below -

fwiw we did white quartz perimeters in a recent vacation build and i made sure to have the counter sample with me when selecting paint colors as they can be pretty different across different brands

    https://www.kylieminteriors.ca/the-3-best-white-paint-colors-for-cabinets-trim/

I’d wait on the backsplash until everything is installed

I’m not big on splashes so don’t have recommendations. I just run a band on 5” countertop as the splash and paint the wall above.

I concur to get everything installed and the search for splash last.

  • last month

My kitchen is SW Creamy, but it can lean yellow in certain light. I like it because I have a lot of walnut stained trim in my house and stark white would be deadly.
SW Antique is another soft off white.

Please tell me you aren’t putting vinyl floors over your wood floors.

  • last month

@la_la Girl Thank you!! I will certainly look into that! And that's great advice! I actually picked up countertop samples today

  • last month

@Kendrah I was thinking the same thing about the window. The house is brick, which I've read is more expensive. I think it would make a big difference though.

  • last month

@thinkdesignlive the kitchen floors are laminate and have swelling from water damage. They also have to be replaced bc the wall oven area is being removed and the cabinets and countertops will be extended to the wall

Just a little update: this backsplash is my top choice right now. ive got to go back and get the quartz sample and see how it looks together in my kitchen but that was the countertop i was leaning towards. im still trying to figure out the kitchen cabinet color but here are some ive considered. thank you all for your help so far!

Trying to match a tile to a counter ? Better to have at least some contrast which doesnt have to mean bold . The veins and tones in what you show are similar/ but not a match. Doesnt work very well. Sometimes the exact counter slab can be used as backsplash / would you prefer that? RE : cabinet paint swatches shown …vary from grayish to yellow to neutral cream.. right now decide which one.

Wait to choose your backsplash. Install everything else - floors, cabinets and countertop- and especially lighting. Looking at a couple of tiles horizontally on your other samples will not match what it looks like on the wall, underneath your cabinets. Backsplashes are tricky for that reason.

You have time to wait and see what each of these will look like when the kitchen is nearly done.

@herbflavor @RedRyder thanks guys! I am leaning towards a neutral cream now that I found a backsplash tile that doesn't clash. The veining in the countertop is warm which I love but every backsplash tile I have except for the one I included in the update pulled gray next to it and my top paint colors. I'm now leaning towards Pale Oak (BM) now

@herbflavor I actually did consider using the countertops on the walls bc I've had such difficulty finding tiles which meant I was stuck on a cabinet color. I do really like the look of that a lot but I have always wanted to have a vertical tile backsplash extended to the ceiling

I love the vertical backsplash tile, too. I have painted beadboard as my backsplash because my messy cooktop is on the island. I ran the beadboard on the back wall of the glass fronted cabinets as well. I like the vertical feel of it, so I vote 100% for the narrow tiled backsplash in your new kitchen.

What is the final decision on the cabinet color?

Tilebar.com has great options and you can get 5 samples for $5.

Houzz is t letting me post photos from my iPad album….🤨

@RedRyder after several paint samples later, I think I've finally landed on Natural Cream by Benjamin Moore. I never thought picking a cabinet color would take so much time and energy lol
