need help for kitchen floor with water damage
Comments (2)Our insurance sent out a contractor, we will need to have the whole kitchen and surrounding area redone so there is a match. I am thinking of using tile, or some other surface to avoid similar problem in the future. Has anyone used a tile or slate, or wood tile? There is wood in the next room...See MoreNeed a magical kitchen flooring solution
Comments (13)Don't worry, live_wire_oak, I don't have visions of expensive kitchens dancing in my head! I know reno's can be slippery slope. You chose the perfect word - modest - to describe our house (and our life). I am planning to have quartz counters since I can get them for a good price and we don't have a big counter space. I just want to make sure that it won't look odd, as though I ran out of money or something. I have no vision to imagine how things will look, so that's why I thought I'd ask here. I'll look into LVTs, thank you, momjk. I hadn't heard of that. As for cork, I had wondered about that originally, but the people I talked to about doing our kitchen suggested that it wasn't a good solution for a busy family since it wouldn't hold up. I don't think I can do the vinyl floor planks that look like laminate since it wouldn't match the hardwood but wouldn't be enough of a difference to look good. I'm afraid it would look like I tried to match but couldn't. Keep watching, I'll be asking more questions later! Thank you everyone....See MoreWater damage on the kitchen wood floor - what now?
Comments (3)Solid or engineered? If it is solid, then Ellsworth-Hallett has pointed out that it takes ++++time to get a wood floor to dry out (a few days to become soaked = few MONTHS to dry out). Large, industrial sized fans can help move things along. Even normal house fans can work to get air moving over the wood. More movement = faster drying time. Once the +++++time has passed you can reassess. If these are engineered hardwoods, we have a chance the damage is a little bit more than warping. There are some engineered hardwoods that will separate or delaminate when soaked. The glues that hold the layers together can let go, causing those planks to fail. If that happens, the only remedy is to remove and replace the warped planks. But first: you must give it TIME!!!! Lots and LOTS of TIME! A fan and a few months = about right. I would look at this area again sometime around June. That's about when you will find the final presentation. Until then, it is a waiting game. You can bring a standing fan into the kitchen, plug it in and let it run for as many hours as you can for as many weeks as you can. It can shorten your wait time (but increase your electricity bill)....See MoreRemodeling help- Repairing Radiant Floor w/ maple wood
Comments (2)Is there any paper work for the radiant heat install? I ask because we had radiant heat and the builder used a company who provided a grid on how to lay the run. With that knowledge, you, as we did, could have plugs in the floor. The house we redid before, was built in 1840, with random wide pine floors, which had suffered tremendously from all the use. My builder took them up and flipped them over. Then we refinished them. I really shouldn’t be commenting as I know so little about this, but just wanted to get you out of the unanswered dilemmas. Lots and lots of great floor experts here who will give you the best advice....See MoreCancork Floor Inc.
