placement of dishwasher

Hello hello, I am in debates of putting the dishwasher on the right side of sink to get it away from the cooking/prep area. It will likely not be able to have both dishwasher and fridge open at the same time. Would you keep it on the left side of sink or right side?

Getting the dishwasher away from the cooking area is a solid idea. Go with it

Hello Lisa, It will be more convenient for you to have the dishwasher on either side of the sink during clean up. I would place the DW depending if your right or left handed. I hope this is helpful!

Which upper and lower cabinets will the bulk of dishes and cookware go in? That would also influence my decision. I prefer loading DW to my left and putting dinnerware up in the cabinet above or to the left of the DW.

Hi Lisa - I understand your concern with moving the DW to the right of this sink. But let me ask you a few questions that may help you decide on the best location.

    1. Where are you planning on storing your dishes? I like to plan the DW location close to the location where dishes, silverware, and pots and pans are stored.
    2. How many people work in the kitchen? If there is only one cook - I would recommend keeping the DW to the left of the sink to allow for additional family members (kids, spouse etc.) to have unlimited access to the fridge for beverages etc. If this is a two cook kitchen you could position the DW on either side.

In addition - there is no right or wrong answer here. I would position the DW in the location that works best for you and your family.

    Good luck with your project!

Can't really read your plan well enough to comment. The printing is very low contrast so I find it hard to see what's what. I do see the sink and fridge locations. They look too close to me. I base this conclusion on the following reasoning:

    A) The sink is the #1 most frequently-used place in your kitchen. The fridge is a close #2. Unless you are cooking hot meals on 4 burners 3 times a day, the cooktop is a distant #4 (after microwave and garbage, roughly tied at #3). Dishwasher is #5 and the oven is a rare #5 (unless, of course, you bake relentlessly throughout the day).

I am doing a layout myself, I noticed the overhang of the island extends slightly into the refrigerator area. If you put stools under the overhang it will pull out slightly in this area. So to have a dishwasher in this area will have , the refrigerator and possibly someone sitting in the corner as well as the dishwasher door. You may want to shorten the island slightly if you want to eliminate the end of the island competing with the refrigerator. Is it French door or one door? In other words, did you consider the size of the door swing of your refrigerator, you should be able to stand in front of your refrigerator.

You do not show any upper cupboards or window openings.,You might want to consider how far it is to walk to the cupboards for glasses, mugs and dishes and cutlery.

Are you right or left handed? Some people like the dishwasher opening to the right of the sink if right handed. So it depends how often you take things out of it. If this matters greatly to you it might override these other considerations.

I have a similar decision to make. Ideally since there are three right handlers in my family, I would put the dishwasher to the right but I would then create a blind corner cupboard in the corner, I needed 15" lower cupboard to install a very efficent and easily used pullout system which utilizes the full corner. If I stood to the right of dishwasher I would only have 15" which is too tight to stand, so I would always have to approach the diswasher from one side. So I decided to sacrifice my positioning for ease of loading and put it to the left. Besides, my son is left handed.

Without knowing these particulars in your kitchen like where are you storing your dishes and if being right or left handed matters to you, I would leave it to the left side of the sink where you have it because you can approach and stand on both sides of your dishwasher door and you would not have to worry about the refrigerator door and a person sitting at the stool closest to the refrigerator.

If it's any help, we once had the d/w in the island, not on a wall, so not immediately beside the sink, the cooking or the prep areas, and it worked REALLY well for us - easy to fill without getting in the way, easy to empty - the emptyer simply pivoted on one heel to put away plates, glasses, cutlery, etc.

I cannot tell what is what with the labels on my screen but I would always go with your dominant hand side if you like keeping wet dishes and glasses in one piece. If you grew up used to having the dishwasher on your non dominant side, and do not mind, you can certainly get away with that again. It actually made me crazy to find at least 50% of houses I looked at over a 2 year period to be lefty-friendly with the dishwashers when only 10% of people are lefty. It convinced me that the people designing the kitchens are not the people doing the clean up. I had tried switching when assigned to lefty friendly military quarters overseas after growing up with the dw on my dominant side and I flat out hated it. It would be a deal breaker if I was house shopping unless the kitchen needed to be re-done and the placement was easy to change.

I would place it to the right of the sink. This would reduce your plumbing costs and make future maintenance simpler. Relocating the garbage/recycle area to the end of the island closest to the sink would be ideal as it would create a comfortable triangle for disposing of food wastes, pre rinsing and loading.
