That depends on many things ,lighting in the home the Sumer of the home the height of ceilings . You could do a 50% strength of the wall color or do a off white like white dove

I think they're 10 ft. ceilings. It'll be a brand new house and they paint everything off white. I heard in a new house that it is best to wait about 1 year before you paint though, because the house settles. I don't know if I can wait that long! I know I want some kind of neutral earthtone color so going 50% less of that color is what you're saying? Good idea. Oh and there are big windows in there so in the daytime there is quite enough light.

Do you have photos of the space you have in mind of changing?

No I don't because it is not built yet. I did walk through a home that was almost finished and noticed all the natural light coming in from the large windows. There were no window treatments on yet though. The room is a small family room 16X14. I'm premature putting this up, I guess. I just love decorating and like to plan ahead!
