Clean them with tsp solution scrub them with a scotch brite pad and then take 120 grit sandpaper and scuff sand them . Dust them off do any repairs if needed with wood filler or bondo spot sand repairs, then prime with a quality primer after primer dries lightly sand if needed and then apply two coats Benjamin Moore advance or insylx cabinet coat also sold by Benjamin Moore both good products and you don't need a top coat of anything to protect the paint

Thank-you. I'm concerned about the paint chipping. Does that ever happen with this paint.? Also how should I apply the paint? I don't have an air gun but I could get one if you think that it would look better but I would prefer not to.

Spraying always looks better chipping will happen if the prep isn't done correctly

Oh my goodness! From the day we bought our home 24 years ago I hated the plain brown cabinetry in both the kitchen and the baths. The house was still under construction, but the cabinets had already been ordered and I had to live with it. More recently I’ve been aware of refacing cabinets, but the cost is a bit higher than we can afford at this time. I never considered repainting because I imagined they would end up showing brush strokes a chipping. Your advice has convinced me that painting really could be a viable option. I’m overjoyed!
