Need Help with Everything

So I would like to get new furniture but I dont know what to get, two sofas two chairs - the space I have is pretty big however its narrow. I can easily fit two sofas and two chairs. Id like to get rid of the table, desk and cube thing so ignore those they will be moved in due time. However I have a HUGE problem with my fireplace not being even, the wall on the left is about 4ft of space the wall on the right is about 2ft so it frustrates me. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

How about one sofa, maybe larger, facing the fireplace and two chairs facing sofa. The off center placement of fireplace would be less noticeable. The blue walls are so lovely, how about a lighter color on sofa, and maybe a pop of saturated color for chairs? A coral or green, perhaps. Also a more contemporary style for the furniture might be cool. It's a lovely room!

I really wanted to maybe do a built in of some sort but not sure. One sofa we've tried it then sits too far from the sofa, its almost as if the room is 3ft too wide.

    Or sectional?

You don't need to have long drapes that cover the baseboard heat--could be a fire hazard. Puddling grommet drapes is an oxymoron.

Love your prints over the desk. That whole display looks great.

They are water baseboard so not much of a fire hazard, I was in a hurry to hang them when they were first hung, would like to change them out for something else.

Here is the furniture Im looking at possibly getting.. Thoughts? And the mantle I want to add? And the layout that Im questioning is pretty much how the furniture is laid out in the picture added.

Before you take your tree completely down, try moving it to the wall next to the fireplace just to see if a tall palm or ficus might be just what you need to fill that space without making it look busy.

If you do get a new sofa then a comfy chair and ottoman angled in with a picture above and a floor lamp might also fill that space.

-- I noticed that the shelf unit is placed in front of a pair of louvered doors. Am I seeing this right? Also, what are you using the round table for? Thanks!

Try moving your end tables to the outside of the sofas and moving sofas closer to fireplace. Your sofas don't look bad. Why do you want to replace them?

Not enough seating they are big bulky love seats.

There is a self unit in front of exterior french doors that will be replaced next spring and the shelving unit will be moved to my walk in closet. The table is there because we bought a new dining room set, will be moving the table shortly along with the desk on the other side because we have a den that we are re-arranging as well

I like the sectional it just limits things a bit
  • 12 years ago
You won't be so limited with a bi-sectional whose chaise switches sides at will.

-- The furniture you have now, 2 loveseats, are on the chubby side. You might want to think about replacing them with one sofa [not loveseats] and a pair of chairs, grouped around the fireplace with the sofa facing the fireplace. You have plenty of length in the room so use that for your sofa. The new pieces should be slimmed down and have exposed legs to give the room a lighter feel.

Do not worry any longer about the centeredness [is that a word?] of the fireplace and window because you cannot do anything to change that. Just go about your business and finish the room and before you know it, you will not notice it.

Can you give me an example of the furniture you are referring to - slimmed down with legs exposed because I don't want the furniture to get swallowed up in the room either.

This layout and furniture colors would work, even if you repainted. Also take a look at the mantel in the 2nd photo.

Your layout now with the two sofas facing each other is perfect. It gives each sofa a view of the other sofa as well as the fireplace and the wall with the windows. I would not change the arrangement. I would definitely not do a sectional; it will limit you far too much.

Your off-center fireplace does not disturb me at all. You do need a bigger piece of art on the wide wall though. It should be at least twice as wide and twice as tall as what you have there now, and should be lowered to relate to the small console table you're going to put there. ;-)

I like the fabric of the drapes, and the puddling here (though usually I dislike puddling, but in this room it seems appropriate). That said, I agree that puddled grommet drapes are an oxymoron, and I'd like to see them hung closer to the ceiling.

I would definitely look for lighter colored sofas in a bit slimmer style, and wait until you find the perfect ones because the ones you have now aren't bad at all.

    Odd wall fixed.

I don't know how modern you want to go, but look for slimmer lines and legs:

This sofa is great! It can morph from transitional to contemporary and would be a smart purchase. If you decide to add a pair of chairs, they are going to define your style. Traditional lines and fabrics/prints - soft contemporary lines and fabrics will work.

I liked the idea someone had of the mantle spanning the fireplace onto and across the wall. Go both ways with artwork above both sides that relate to each other.

Take a look at these chair styles. (ignore the fabric as it can be customized). I also found a rug which offers some options for bringing the room together with the palladium blue walls.

I like where your current sofas are located now, I would add two more lounge chairs and have them face the fireplace. Here are some sofa and chair options from Bryght that I think would work well.

The Edward loveseat in beige paired with 2 of the Polo lounge chair in cognac, the cognac leather will pull out the warmth of the fireplace stone.

    OR

The Newport loveseat in beige paired with 2 of the Jenifer lounge chairs

for more options and information www.bryght.com

In regards to addressing one wall being larger than the other, have you thought making a feature all out of the larger wall? Whether it be finishing it in a wallpaper, paint color, or artwork piece? For the smaller wall I would place a decorative floor lamp or lush greenery in the corner. By adding a floor lamp you would be brightening up the dark spot in the room.
