If you want it to blend in, you could paint the fire surround the mantle, the cupboards and the wall all in the same shade or similar variations. As a less dramatic change, try just painting the cupboards and mantle in a pastel shade.

No fireplace is complete without a fabulour mirror or artwork above it. Lastly pop some large church candles in the arch, or add a lovely firescreen - search eBay or your local vintage/salvage stores for these.

I would paint the brick, cabinets, mantle, and window trim all the same color white. Wall above fireplace should coordinate with the furnishings of the room.

That looks like a non-working fireplace. I would tear it out and build more of the glass front cabinets to fill the space. Who couldn't use a wall of custom built-ins?

Remove the cabinets either side, possibly remove the windows too and create a seamless wall. Paint slightly darker or lighter colour than fireplace. Mantle piece should be removed or shortened so, it is just a little longer than fireplace itself, so you can still display your favourite items or photos, but do not overcrowd.
Art work above the fireplace would work well like above mentioned. If your room's focal point is the fireplace, then it should be enhanced by removing those windows, otherwise it is confusing to eyes, and feels something isn't right. Also you were right not to like this fireplace. I can see why..

I agree with COASTROAD. Your fireplace and that entire wall and room is awesome. Rich with character! What doesn't work for me is the stark contrast of the white painted brick and the really dark wood trim. What would be great, if you have the energy or budget, is to strip the window and cabinet wood trim so it can be a lighter color. The baseboards can still be white or off white. Try to find a fireplace insert or screen that will highlight the beauty of that arched front. Looks like gorgeous floors and a big space! The ceilings look like they've been dropped with ceiling panels--ugh. What's above those panels I wonder? Another 8 inches?
