Help! Does this rug match my couch and tables?

last modified: 12 years ago
So i really like this rug but i'm not sure if it goes with the couch and chairs we already have? The rug is more cream/beige with grey and yellow and the chairs are grey and white. The coffee and side tables are white. We're going for a contemporary/modern feel. I only have 5 days to return it so thanks for people's thoughts! Thanks!

I like dclostboy's rug suggestion. Or you can use more color as in this one

yes your rug goes very well with the chair but there is missing some yellow accent here and there that can bring everything to a different level.

Keep the rug, get rid of the chair.

The rug is really the only thing i can return; I am planning on getting yellow accent pillows for th couch and chairs

Sell the chair. It may be just me, but the chair looks to be competing with itself. The pattern, as it changes direction to fit the form of the chair, reminds me of those posters from the 60's that hurt your eyes to look at. Maybe its just the picture.
If the chair has conflicting pattern that bothers you, add a solid or mostly solid pillow or throw on the chair.. The chair is a keeper!! ;)
Agree with Mark Bischak but that is not an option so you need to stop looking at geometric designs for rugs. (obviously that is what you are drawn to)You have that in the chairs so go for solid color with texture otherwise you wont appreciate the great chairs.

Other patterns can be added to the sofa with pillows and in art

To me what is not working about the rug is that it looks dirty compared with the bright white in the coffee table, West Elm chair and other things that seem to be white in your photo. I think you'd be better off with a rug with a grey or other background color - like the one posted by dclostboy and others above. Stay away from beige or cream.

Include some yellow cushions and everything will tie in. Rug looks good with your furniture.
The rug works with the sofa but it fights with the chair. You also need to bring other colors in to the room. Maybe a teal colored set of bowls and vases, gold picture frames, art with some complimentary colors and additional lighting.

Honeycomb Textured Wool Rug from West Elm, not sure if the colour is more gold than yellow, they have it in grey also. I agree, the rug you brought home looks 'dirty' against the white in your chair. Sarah Richardson does a lot of mushroom & grey neutrals & white with one chosen accent colour, but she repeats it fully, at least 3 things that contain each colour, could be lampshades, curtains, pillows etc. You just need more repetition of the colours you have started. Maybe you should find a curtain fabric with all 3 of your colours to help you on your way?

I dont mind the background color of the rug but I do wish you had a different colored chair I would pop a solid accent pillow on that chair and the sofa..

I don't normally like pattern on pattern but I better get used to it as its the next trend in clothes, interiors, etc.

Hi, the rug goes well with the sofa but not with anything else. You should look at getting a carpet with a more contemporary design, different colors ,brighter preferably since a rug should really uplift your room and surroundings, add life to it, and blend in with the rest of the furniture.
A carpet is usually the last thing on anybody's mind, but its one of the most important things as well. Do go for a bigger size and look at colors and contemporary design options, Since you also have wooden flooring,

I like your idea of getting yellow pillows as well, it will add in uplifting this particular area.
    Cheers. :)

Rug and chair don't look good together. Do one or the other if u have to.
Return the rug. Get a textured rug in a solid color.
It works. Now add a very big 40" picture over sofa using colors in rug. To tie together add end tables to sofa mix it up. West Elm sells martini tables in silver, or a faux tree stump in silver. Add a tall brush nickel lamp to table on end of sofa. Add mustard color in rug to pillows, add same to chair. It will tie room together better.

the yellow looks good. But a little more texture, maybe a different design.
Although, You probably should first just try to imagine placing the yellow there, you don't want it to end being an eyesore after sometime since your room setting is dark.

If you want a geometric I would do a large scale and reverse your colors, and making a yellow accent color the dominate hue.

I like this one you posted: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/nuLOOM-Moroccan-Trellis-Shag-Rug-67-x-9/7786161/product.html

But I think in your case, simplicity is key and keeping the scale proportionate to each other. Or do a non-geometrical pattern on the rug to balance with your chair.

linachoudhry, Which rug are or rugs are you leaning towards? Please post. What size rug did you decide that you need?

Update on your rug and room?

dclostboy has a great rug idea but I would like to see a bigger rug. The small rug breaks up the floor space and makes the room look skimpy is size.

We went with an 8 by 10 rug from overstock in white and grey and a grey and yellow color theme. Pics below. Thanks for the help!
Um... gorgeous! Can you post a pic of the entire space?

This looks very nice! Much better choice on the rug and the pops of bright yellow really bring in some much needed visual interest. Plus its fun!
The rug choice looks great here, and the extra pop of colors with the pillow creates the perfect space!

sorry for the super late response, but here are some additional pics of the space

    Nice job!
I think all of it could go together in the same room but I would not put the chair by the rug, it needs a separate area, metal or black table might work better than white.
It looks nice! The only thing I would add would be a painting above the sofa. You have a large wall there that would probably benefit from a large painting. Beautiful space overall.
    It looks great!

    Nice job!
thanks everyone! we have been looking for a piece of art to go above the sofa, we just have not found the perfect piece yet. and of course we are going to add window treatments, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Take your time! It took us 7 years to finally decide on a custom painting (needed something large). Window treatments still nonexistent..hoping for this year:)

Terrific, really like the new rug and yellow accents. Above the couch a couple of Roy Liechtenstein serigraphs like the one suggested by Genevieve or a single big sized one would give it the finishing touch

Good job! Looks professional. As you already know, a large picture above the sofa will look great. Pull out some of the yellow. If you can combine the color combo in both your dining room and great room it will have the right flow. Keep up the good work!

I need your help! I just bought this rug don't like it with my couch. What kind of style of couch and table would look best with this? Or how do I dress this up to work?
