Ellen is your house lacking any functions that you need, like a dining area, or study, or place to gather and watch tv?

I'd lose the dark curtains and dark furnishings... maybe create a bright and cheery reading nook. Perhaps paint a nice, airy neutral or pale yellow. If you don't need the china cabinet, then open up the space with a chaise lounge and a sizable table for a good reading lamp and room for a cup of tea.

For window coverings, you could either leave it open to enjoy the light from the screened porch, or if privacy is an issue, replace the dark curtains with something breezy. Add a potted ficus for some green, and a nice, soothing print for the wall, and you're good!

I agree with jtomalley. It's a small room and lighter colors would probably work better here. If you can't change the furniture you can at least change the curtains. Please tell us more about the house and your design preferences.
