The clients did not care for a tub in this bathroom, so we constructed a spacious full shower instead, with a niche and bench that is tiled in a beautiful sage green tile arranged in a vertical stack pattern. These colors and patterns fit in seamlessly with the Mid-Century Modern style! When designing the vanity, the clients opted for a more modern look by choosing a floating vanity, meaning the cabinets hang off the wall and do not touch the ground. The cabinet doors are a slab style, which means there is no paneling or decoration of any kind; which is another very modern touch. The vanity was made of maple wood and was finished in a warm golden stain. The vanity was topped with a stunning sparkling white flecked quartz with a 3-inch edge cap, which gives the illusion of a much thicker countertop. This bathroom also included a Japanese-style toilet, with features such as a seat warmer and bidet. To illuminate the space further, we installed two recessed can lights in addition to spectacular globe-shaped vanity lights- which is a key element in Mid-Century Modern design. Now, to finish out the space! We installed stunning marble-look hexagon tiles for the bathroom and shower floors and opted for striking champagne bronze fixtures to complete this Mid-Century Modern aesthetic.

Located along a country road, a half mile from the clear waters of Lake Michigan, we were hired to re-conceptualize an existing weekend cabin to allow long views of the adjacent farm field and create a separate area for the owners to escape their high school age children and many visitors! The site had tight building setbacks which limited expansion options, and to further our challenge, a 200 year old pin oak tree stood in the available building location. We designed a bedroom wing addition to the side of the cabin which freed up the existing cabin to become a great room with a wall of glass which looks out to the farm field and accesses a newly designed pea-gravel outdoor dining room. The addition steps around the existing tree, sitting on a specialized foundation we designed to minimize impact to the tree. The master suite is kept separate with ‘the pass’- a low ceiling link back to the main house. Painted board and batten siding, ribbons of windows, a low one-story metal roof with vaulted ceiling and no-nonsense detailing fits this modern cabin to the Michigan country-side. A great place to vacation. The perfect place to retire someday.

Located on approximately 12 acres of upland hillside that include old bluestone quarry sites, this project has developed over time through a series of alterations and additions to an existing late eighteenth century farmhouse. Initial new work included a new entry, screen porch and shed dormer additions to the main house, as well as a subsequent detached new ceramics studio. More recent complimentary additions include new dining, living and screened in porch spaces as well as new entry and connection links. Conceptualized as a cascading series of vernacular forms on a moderately sloping hillside, all new spaces feature extra height ceilings and plenty of glass and light connecting inside to out with new bluestone terraces, retaining walls and garden features. We also created a 246 square foot studio with a generous southwestern exposure and a passive cantilevered roof coverage for an aspiring ceramic artist. Inspired by local agrarian features, this new structure takes its cue from nearby chicken coops, but transforms with careful window, door and exterior material detailing. Built upon the tailings of an early bluestone quarry, the exterior landscaping includes the integration of existing adjacent ledge outcropping, dry laid bluestone walls, steps and terraces with a mature hardwood canopy. Planned for year round occupation (although with easy seasonal shutdown mode), amenities include: in floor radiant heating, slop sink, floor drains, insulated windows and doors, code compliant (spray foam) insulation envelope

Originally built to house a garage, workshop and wood storage, this simple structure has been gently re-imagined into a unique guesthouse with a rustic accents and modern comforts. The exterior retains the classic barn appearance, with the addition of carefully placed windows and industrial-looking Corten steel siding. The introduction of a large dormer to the center of the structure was a simple move, but provided multiple functions: • breaks up the 8’-0” ceiling on the main floor, letting in additional daylight and providing visual relief to the otherwise low ceiling • creates circulation space with the rustic steel stair and bridge • utilizes reclaimed wood siding on the ceiling and walls, contrasting with white drywall and clean bright finishes • visually connects the two upstairs bedrooms with the main floor The focus of the interior was to preserve and accentuate the barn features as much as possible, and have a warm and cozy, energy efficient guest house. Programming included two bedrooms, two bathrooms, dining area, farmhouse kitchen and pantry, living room and laundry room. Materials and furnishes were selected to create a clean, comfortable and inviting interior with a rustic edge. The exposed steel beam was left unfinished showing its existing wear and tear, and the new steel stair was left raw to eventually age and match the beam. Durable and economical oak floors were used throughout. Traditional subway tile and penny rounds contrast with the modern, clean lines of the kitchen and bathrooms. A custom sliding barn door adds texture to the kitchen and closes off the pantry and laundry room from the space. Furniture was a mix of new and existing, which makes the spaces both familiar and comfortable. All in all, there is a timeless look to the end product; a traditional farmstead structure has definitely been giving a great new lease on life. Andrew Pogue

This project involved the design of a new open-air Pool House on grounds of a 1905 carriage house estate. The main house and guesthouse on this property were also extensively renovated as part of the project. The concept for the new Pool House was to incorporate the vocabulary of these existing structures into the form while creating a protected, yet open space with a bright and fresh interior. The Pool house is sited on axis to a new fifty-foot pool and the existing Breakfast Room terrace with views back to the house and the adjacent pastoral fields. The exterior of the pool house is shingled, with bracketed rakes, exposed rafter tails and a cupola. Wood louvered shutters and a custom made removable fabric cover protect the structure during the off season. The interior of the Pool House includes a vaulted sitting area with wide beadboard on the walls and ceiling, shingled half walls and a soapstone wet bar. The bluestone flooring flows in from the pool terrace, blurring the boundaries of interior and exterior space. The bath and changing area have a built in stained bench and a vanity with an integral soapstone sink. An exterior shower enclosure is linked to the form by the bracketed extension of the main roof. Our clients for this project are a professional couple with a young family. They approached us to help with extending and improving their home in London SW2 to create an enhanced space both aesthetically and functionally for their growing family. We were appointed to provide a full architectural and interior design service, including the design of some bespoke furniture too. A core element of the brief was to design a kitchen living and dining space that opened into the garden and created clear links from inside to out. This new space would provide a large family area they could enjoy all year around. We were also asked to retain the good bits of the current period living spaces while creating a more modern day area in an extension to the rear. It was also a key requirement to refurbish the upstairs bathrooms while the extension and refurbishment works were underway. The solution was a 21m2 extension to the rear of the property that mirrored the neighbouring property in shape and size. However, we added some additional features, such as the projecting glass box window seat. The new kitchen features a large island unit to create a workspace with storage, but also room for seating that is perfect for entertaining friends, or homework when the family gets to that age. The sliding folding doors, paired with floor tiling that ran from inside to out, created a clear link from the garden to the indoor living space. Exposed brick blended with clean white walls creates a very contemporary finish throughout the extension, while the period features have been retained in the original parts of the house.

Our Clients, the proud owners of a landmark 1860’s era Italianate home, desired to greatly improve their daily ingress and egress experience. With a growing young family, the lack of a proper entry area and attached garage was something they wanted to address. They also needed a guest suite to accommodate frequent out-of-town guests and visitors. But in the homeowner’s own words, “He didn’t want to be known as the guy who ‘screwed up’ this beautiful old home”. Our design challenge was to provide the needed space of a significant addition, but do so in a manner that would respect the historic home. Our design solution lay in providing a “hyphen”: a multi-functional daily entry breezeway connector linking the main house with a new garage and in-law suite above.
